What Does IDC Mean? I Don't Care, How Harsh It Sounds and IDC vs IDM

IDC means 'I don't care'. Dictionary.com lists idc as an abbreviation of I don't care that comes from its use in digital communications. It can be relaxed, as in 'I'm happy with anything', or cold, as in 'this doesn't interest me'. Wiktionary links it to IDM, 'I don't mind', which is the gentler version.

Three letters, a lot of possible attitude. IDC is one of the most tone-sensitive abbreviations in texting. Sent about where to eat, it's easygoing. Sent after someone shares news, it can feel like a slammed door. Here's how to tell the difference and how to reply.

I don't care: the dictionary view

Dictionary.com's American entry gives the meaning plainly: I don't care. Its note on origin says the abbreviation comes from its use in digital communications, so it grew up on screens rather than in print.

Wiktionary files idc under internet slang and text messaging, and adds a useful cross-reference: idm, 'I don't mind', listed as a near-synonym. That pairing is the key to reading IDC well. The two mean almost the same thing on paper, but they don't feel the same.

IDC vs IDM: same idea, different temperature

MessageIDCIDM
'Pizza or Thai?'Easygoing, though a bit flatWarm and flexible
'Should I wear the blue one?'Can sound uninterestedSupportive, you choose
After hearing newsDismissive, often hurtfulRarely used here
About gossipSignals you're not interestedUnusual

If you want to say you're flexible, IDM is the safer choice. IDC leans toward indifference. That doesn't mean IDC is always rude, but it gives the other person less warmth to work with.

When IDC is fine and when it hurts

IDC is fine when the choice doesn't matter and both of you know it. 'Idc, you pick' about a film or a meeting time is relaxed and saves a long back-and-forth. Friends who text a lot will read it that way.

It stings when it lands on something the other person cares about. 'Got the job!' answered with 'idc' is clearly a put-down, joking or not. And in an argument, IDC is often a way of ending the conversation without resolving it. If you've had one of those, the message may say more about the sender's mood than about you.

Softer ways to say it

  • 'I'm easy, you choose.' Flexible without sounding bored.
  • 'Either works for me.' Clear and friendly.
  • 'No strong feelings, go with your gut.' Supportive.
  • 'Honestly, both sound good.' Positive rather than neutral.

And if you do mean you're not interested, it's kinder to say so with a reason. 'Not really my thing, but tell me how it goes' keeps the door open. Words like ngl can soften an honest opinion without making it cold.

IDC in the news is a company

Here's a mix-up worth knowing. When IDC appears in tech or business news, it almost always refers to a market research firm, not a mood. Dictionary.com's example sentences for IDC show this clearly: in 2026 coverage, The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch and the Los Angeles Times all quote IDC as an analyst group estimating sales and market share for phones and smart glasses.

Dictionary.com's British section adds another formal meaning: an industrial development certificate. Wiktionary also notes that idc is an ISO 639-3 language code. None of those will turn up in a group chat, but they explain why a search for IDC can bring up very serious-looking results.

These are made-up texts, not real chats, to show the range:

  • 'Idc, whatever's quickest.' Relaxed about a small choice.
  • 'Idc what they think.' Brushing off other people's opinions.
  • 'Ok idc anymore.' Frustrated, often ending an argument.
  • 'Idc lol do what you want.' Light, but a little dismissive.

How to reply to an IDC

If IDC is about a small choice, the best reply is simply to decide. 'Ok, Thai then' ends the back-and-forth and is usually what the other person wanted. Asking again often frustrates people who said idc because they didn't want to choose.

If it lands after you've shared something important, it's fair to check in. 'That felt a bit harsh, everything ok?' gives them a chance to explain. Sometimes people send idc when they're tired, stressed or distracted, not because they don't care about you.

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

And if it's the end of an argument, it may be better to pause the chat altogether. Coming back later, in a call or in person, is often easier than trying to fix tone through a screen.

Capital letters and extra words can shift the tone too. 'IDC' in capitals can read as louder and more annoyed than lowercase 'idc'. 'Idc tbh' adds a shrug of honesty, while 'idc lol' softens it into a joke. 'Idc at all' makes the point stronger. And 'idc, you decide' turns it into a hand-over rather than a brush-off. When you're reading an idc, those small extras often tell you more than the three letters themselves, and they're worth a second look before you react.

It's worth remembering that tone in text is easy to misread. A short reply can feel colder than it was meant, especially without emojis or punctuation. If a friend usually writes long messages and suddenly sends just 'idc', that change is the signal, not the letters. If they always write briefly, it probably means nothing at all.

Why I'd never send IDC to a customer

This one's simple. A business saying 'I don't care' in any form is a disaster, even in jest. If a customer asks you to choose between two options, say 'Both work well, here's the difference' and help them decide. If you mean you're flexible on timing, say 'Whatever suits you best'. Your customer should come away feeling that you care about the outcome, because that's what they're paying for.
