What Does Simp Mean? The Dating Insult, Its Long History and the Softer Fan Meaning

Simp means someone who shows excessive devotion to a crush or partner, usually a man trying too hard to win a woman's attention, and it's mostly used as an insult. The catch is that it's also softened into a fan word, so 'I'm such a simp for this show' just means 'I love it'.

Simp is one of those words that sounds like a joke and often isn't. Teens use it to tease friends, adults see it in comments and wonder whether to worry, and fans use it about celebrities with no insult intended at all. Here's what each version means, where it came from and why it's worth thinking twice before using it.

Simp as a dating insult

Dictionary.com describes simp as a slang insult for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a failed hope of winning sexual attention. Merriam-Webster's dictionary entry is a little broader: someone, especially a man, who shows excessive concern, attention or deference toward a romantic partner or love interest. Cambridge Dictionary marks it as disapproving and puts it simply: someone who tries too hard to do what another person wants, especially in a romantic relationship.

In practice, someone can be called a simp for very ordinary kindness. Dictionary.com notes a man might get the label for paying for dinner or giving a girl a compliment. That's the problem with the word, which I'll come back to.

You'll also see it as a verb. Dictionary.com gives both forms: 'He's such a simp' as a noun, and 'All he does is simp over her' as a verb, with 'simping' for the ongoing behaviour.

Simpleton to simping: a word older than TikTok

Simp feels new, but it isn't. Merriam-Webster dates its first known use to 1903, as a short form of simple or simpleton, meaning a foolish person. Cambridge still lists that meaning first. Merriam-Webster dates the romantic sense to around 1968 and says it may be of separate origin, possibly linked to words like sympathy.

Merriam-Webster's slang page points to a citation in Green's Dictionary of Slang from a late 1960s college slang study, defining simp as being excessively submissive to a girlfriend. From there, both Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster trace it through hip-hop and R&B. Dictionary.com quotes a 1987 Ice-T record, and Merriam-Webster mentions a 1992 Boyz II Men song titled 'Sympin' ain't easy'.

How TikTok's Simp Nation pushed simp mainstream

According to Dictionary.com, simp spread on YouTube and Reddit in the 2010s and then went mainstream in December 2019, when a viral TikTok trend called 'Simp Nation' had young men acting out supposedly simp behaviour, like comforting a girlfriend. In 2020 came 'No Simp September', a joke challenge that Dictionary.com says reinforced a lot of traditional gender stereotypes.

Dictionary.com also flags a popular claim that simp is a crude acronym. It's a backronym: the word existed long before anyone invented an expansion for it.

Simping for a celebrity, a show or a snack

Here's the softer meaning. Merriam-Webster's slang page says to simp is to show excessive devotion to or longing for someone or something, and that it can also mean flattering a person, organisation or group in the hope they'll view you favourably. Cambridge adds a fan sense: someone who likes and admires someone, especially a famous person, very much, with the example 'Why am I such a simp for middle-aged actors?'.

Dictionary.com says the word is evolving toward a general sense of liking someone, close to the slang stan. So when a friend says 'I'm simping for this new series', there's no insult at all. They're a fan.

A harsher put-down about looks is mogging, so check what mogging means.

Why simp lands as sexist: the criticism

Dictionary.com notes the slang has been criticised for stereotyping men as effeminate and for implying women are manipulative or there to provide men with sexual attention. It also says the subtext is that caring, kind or thoughtful men are weak. One example Dictionary.com quotes is a post pushing back: having feelings and caring about someone doesn't make you less of a man.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

That's worth explaining to teens who use the word casually. Calling a friend a simp because he bought his girlfriend flowers teaches everyone in the chat that kindness is embarrassing. If you'd like a sweeter word for a crush, pookie, the affectionate nickname is the opposite in spirit.

Invented messages using simp

These are made-up messages to show how it's used:

  • 'Bro left practice early to bring her soup, total simp.' Teasing about devotion.
  • 'I'm a simp for this band, I've played the album all week.' The fan meaning.
  • 'Stop simping for that brand, they ignored your complaint.' Fawning over a company.
  • 'You're not a simp for being nice to your girlfriend.' A friend pushing back.

Another teasing label teens use for older people is unc, so see what unc means.

Parents, teens and brand accounts: my take on simp

If you're a parent and you see simp in your teen's messages, look at who's saying it and why. Self-mocking fan talk is harmless. Using it to shame a friend for being kind is worth a gentle chat.

My advice for brands is to steer clear of simp. Even the soft fan sense carries its sexist baggage, and you don't control which meaning a reader hears. Don't call customers simps, even as a joke, and don't use it in captions. If a follower says they're simping for your product, a warm thank you is all you need. The same goes for related insults: if you've seen sigma used in the same circles, my piece on what sigma means covers that one.
