AI Language Learning Apps (2026): 10 AI Tutors Compared

An AI language learning app lets you practise conversations with an AI tutor that listens, replies and corrects you. Some focus on one language, some cover dozens, and some combine AI chat with human teachers. Choose by the language you need and how much feedback you want. Ten options follow, in no particular order.

The hardest part of learning a language has always been speaking practice. Classes are limited, tutors are hard to schedule and talking to strangers is nerve-racking. AI tutors change that: you can practise a conversation at midnight, make the same mistake ten times and nobody minds.

The ten apps below are built around AI conversation practice, from speaking-first courses to AI tutors for less common languages. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each app's own website, read this week. If you'd rather start with a general chatbot, my ten-minutes-a-day language prompts show you how.

AI language learning apps at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each app's own website or App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the app, a course or a version of the app is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check before you sign up.

Which AI tutor suits your situation

  • Learning English specifically: an English-only AI tutor such as Loora.
  • A less common language: an app covering many languages, such as Talkpal.
  • AI practice plus a real teacher: Langua.
  • Getting past freezing up: Univerbal.
  • Moving from intermediate to advanced: Lingolette.
  • A first conversation on day one: Pingo AI.

How to judge an AI tutor's progress claims

Many AI apps promise fast fluency. A fairer yardstick is the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the CEFR. It organises ability into six levels, A1 to C2, grouped as Basic, Independent and Proficient users, and defines each level with can-do descriptors.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Can-do statements describe real tasks, such as following a conversation on a familiar topic or explaining your point of view. Read the descriptors for your target level, then ask whether the AI conversations you're having are pushing you towards those tasks.

Getting the most from AI conversation practice

  1. Tell the AI your level and goal at the start of each session.
  2. Ask it to correct only your three biggest mistakes, so feedback stays useful.
  3. Practise real situations you'll face, such as a job interview or a doctor's appointment.
  4. Repeat a conversation a day later and see what's easier.
  5. Save new phrases and review them before your next session.

What AI tutors still can't do

AI tutors are patient and always available, but they can be too forgiving, and they sometimes accept answers a native speaker would find odd. They also can't fully prepare you for fast, messy real conversations with background noise and interruptions.

Use AI practice to build confidence and fluency, then test it with real people through classes, a language exchange or travel.

Signs an AI tutor isn't helping

  • It never corrects you. Ask for corrections explicitly.
  • Every chat feels the same. Change the scenario or level.
  • You read more than you speak. Switch to voice mode.
  • You freeze with real people. Add a human conversation each week.

Do you make an AI language learning app? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on AI language learning apps

Use an AI tutor for the speaking practice you can't easily get anywhere else, and keep a human in the loop for feedback on the things AI misses. A short AI conversation every day is a brilliant habit.

If you also need to translate documents or messages, my list of AI translators for business covers tools built for that job.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI language learning app?

It's an app where you practise speaking or writing with an AI tutor that replies to you and corrects your mistakes.

Can AI help you become fluent?

AI practice builds speaking confidence and fluency, but most learners still need real conversations with people to reach a high level.

Are AI language tutors better than human tutors?

They're more available and patient, but human tutors give richer feedback and can adapt to you in ways AI still can't.

Which languages do AI tutors cover?

It varies a lot. Some focus on English, others cover more than a hundred languages, so check each app's language list.

How do I measure my progress with an AI tutor?

Use the CEFR can-do descriptors for your target level and check whether you can do those real tasks.

Is AI speaking practice good for shy learners?

Yes. Practising with an AI first lets you make mistakes privately before you speak to real people.
