An AI audiobook generator turns an ebook or manuscript into narrated audio with synthetic voices. Some are publishing programmes run by the big bookstores, some are studios that let you direct the narration and some are free open source converters. Choose by where you want to sell or share the audiobook. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Human narration for a full-length book takes weeks of studio time. That's why so many self-published titles never get an audiobook at all, and why AI narration has moved so fast.
The ten options below cover store programmes, AI audiobook studios and open source converters. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're curious how much AI writing is already on the big stores, my piece on how many AI-written books exist on Amazon sets the scene.
AI audiobook generators at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial or trial credit. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Pick the route that matches where you sell

- Publishing straight to Apple's store: Apple Books.
- Selling through Google's bookstore: Google Play Books.
- Directing voices and pronunciations yourself: ElevenLabs or Narration Box.
- A full cast of character voices: Spoken.
- Large voice libraries and languages: Speechki.
- Free listening copies of books you own: Audiobook Maker, Audiblez or ebook2audiobook.
The Kindle route doesn't take every book
Amazon KDP Help says public domain content is not eligible for audiobooks with virtual voice. It also says an eBook's primary language must be English, Spanish, Italian or French before the option appears.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So if you're republishing a classic, or your book is in another language, you'll need a different route. The open source tools are fine for personal listening, and the studios on this list can produce audio you sell elsewhere.
Get the manuscript ready for a machine narrator
- Use real chapter headings, not images of text.
- Write out numbers, dates and symbols the way they should be read.
- Build a pronunciation list for names and invented words.
- Remove footnote markers and page references.
- Listen to the first chapter in full before you produce the rest.
Store programme or studio?
A store programme is the quickest route to one shop. The audiobook is made and listed inside the store you already publish with, but you play by that store's rules.
A studio gives you more control: casting, pronunciation and pacing, and audio files you can take to more than one store. It asks more of you, because you're the director as well as the author.
Signs the audio needs more work
- Chapter titles are skipped. Fix the headings.
- Dialogue sounds like one person. Try multiple voices.
- Numbers are read oddly. Write them out.
- Listeners stop after chapter one. Check the pacing.
Do you make an AI audiobook tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on AI audiobooks
Start with the book that already sells best as an ebook. An audiobook won't rescue a title nobody reads, but it can open a new audience for one that works. Produce the first chapter, share it with a few readers and ask whether they'd finish it.
If you're still writing, my book writing prompts help you plan chapters that read well aloud from the start.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI audiobook generator?
It's a tool or programme that turns an ebook or manuscript into an audiobook narrated by synthetic voices.
Can I sell an AI-narrated audiobook?
Yes, through the stores and programmes that accept them. Each store sets its own rules, so check before you produce the audio.
Can every Kindle book get a virtual voice audiobook?
No. Amazon KDP Help says public domain books aren't eligible and the primary language must be English, Spanish, Italian or French.
How do I fix mispronounced names?
Use the tool's pronunciation settings, or respell the word in the script the way it should sound.
Are free audiobook converters good enough?
For personal listening to books you own, often yes. For a book you sell, use a tool with editing and pronunciation control.
Should I tell listeners the narration is AI?
Yes. Readers appreciate knowing, and it's worth checking each store's own rules on labelling synthetic narration.
