A resignation letter generator turns a few details, such as your name, role, manager and last working day, into a polite resignation letter you can copy, download or print. Some are AI writers, some fill in templates and some are design tools with letter layouts. This page compares ten free options in no particular order, and the notice rule to check first.
Resigning is awkward enough without staring at a blank page. A generator gets the polite, professional structure down in a minute, so you can spend your energy on the conversation with your manager instead.
The ten tools below include AI writers, template fillers and printable designs. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're resigning because of a better offer, my guide on negotiating before you accept a job offer is worth reading first.
Resignation letter generators at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Check your notice period before you generate anything
GOV.UK says you must give at least a week's notice if you've been in your job for more than a month, and that your contract will tell you whether notice has to be in writing.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Here's where generators trip people up. Many are built for the US, where two weeks' notice is the custom, so they'll fill in a last day that's either too early or later than you need. Your contract may also ask for a month or more. Find your notice clause first, work out your last day, then type that date into the generator rather than accepting its default.
AI writer, template filler or design template?
An AI writer drafts the whole letter from a few details and lets you change the tone. It's quick, but read it closely, because AI letters can sound stiffer than you'd speak.
A template filler slots your details into a tested letter with no AI involved. You get a predictable, polite result, and you can add a personal line of thanks yourself.
A design template gives you a printable layout. It suits workplaces that still expect a signed paper letter, but you'll write the words yourself.
Six things every resignation letter needs
- The date you're writing the letter.
- Your manager's name.
- A clear sentence saying you're resigning.
- Your last working day, based on your notice period.
- A short thank you, if you can mean it.
- An offer to help with the handover.
Signs your resignation letter needs another look
- The last day came from the generator. Check your notice clause.
- It lists everything you disliked. Cut it.
- It doesn't say you're resigning. Make that the first line.
- You haven't kept a copy. Save one now.

My plain advice on writing a resignation letter
Keep it short and kind, and save the reasons for the conversation. A resignation letter goes on your file, so it's no place for complaints, however justified. Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then send the letter straight after so the date is on record. Keep a copy, because GOV.UK points out that written notice helps if you ever need to refer to it later.
If you're also sending out applications, my guide on the email that goes with your resume helps with the next step.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to write a resignation letter?
Your contract tells you whether notice must be in writing. Even if it doesn't, a letter keeps a clear record of your last day.
How much notice should I give in the UK?
GOV.UK says at least a week if you've been in your job for more than a month, unless your contract asks for more.
Is two weeks' notice required?
Two weeks is a US custom, not a UK rule. Check your contract for your own notice period.
Should I give a reason in my resignation letter?
You don't have to. A short, polite letter is enough, and you can explain more in person if you want to.
Can I resign by email?
Usually, unless your contract says otherwise. Keep a copy of the email and any reply for your records.
Are resignation letter generators free?
Most of the tools here say on their own pages that they're free. Some ask you to sign up, so check the free plan column above.
