How to Become a CIA Agent: What the Job Is Called and How Hiring Works

To become what most people call a CIA agent, you apply for an officer role in the CIA's Directorate of Operations, such as Case Officer. You must be a US citizen, be physically in the US when you submit your resume, be willing to move to the Washington, DC area, and pass a background investigation, polygraph interview, and medical and psychological checks.

The first thing to know is that the CIA's own job titles use the word officer, not agent. The Directorate of Operations lists tracks such as Collection Management Officer, Case Officer, Paramilitary Officer, Specialized Skills Officer, Staff Operations Officer and Targeting Officer. If you're searching job listings for agent, you'll miss them. Here's the route based on the CIA's How We Hire and Directorate of Operations pages, read on 26 October 2026.

Basic eligibility

The CIA says that to be considered for any job, you must be:

  • Physically in the United States or one of its territories when you submit your resume through MyLINK
  • A US citizen, with dual US citizens also eligible
  • Willing to move to the Washington, DC area
  • Able to complete security and medical evaluations, including a background investigation, a polygraph interview, and physical and psychological examinations
  • Registered for the Selective Service, if that applies to you

The first point surprises people. Americans living abroad can't simply apply online from overseas. You need to be in the US or a US territory when you hit submit.

The hiring process, step by step

  1. You're invited to apply for a specific position. The CIA describes this as the first stage of its process.
  2. Screening, testing and interviews. You'll need to complete each successfully to move on.
  3. A Conditional Offer of Employment. This comes before the security checks, not after.
  4. Paperwork. You complete and submit the offer paperwork, including the SF-86 security questionnaire.
  5. Security and medical evaluations. These form the clearance process.
  6. The official job offer. Only then do you receive onboarding information.

The CIA is open about the pace. Its own page says the hiring process may be lengthy, and it vets every candidate carefully. Be honest and complete on the SF-86, because the background investigation and polygraph will test what you wrote.

What the Directorate of Operations does

The Directorate of Operations collects intelligence from human sources, known as HUMINT. When necessary, and under unique circumstances, it also conducts covert action as directed by the president. That's the part of the CIA most people picture when they say agent.

Case officers may serve tours abroad to collect foreign intelligence. The directorate also offers roles for people who prefer to stay based in the Washington, DC area. Because of the work, officers often live and work undercover, which means being discreet and selective about who they talk to about their career, even friends and family.

The training you'll go through

Several Directorate of Operations tracks require intensive foundational training that runs for extended periods. The CIA lists some of the physical and practical expectations for trainees:

ExpectationWhat it means in practice
DrivingOperate a motor vehicle without help, in daytime and at night
TerrainCross uneven ground, climb and descend stairs over set distances in all weather
DecisionsMake reasoned decisions under time pressure
LocationSome training happens outside the Washington area

Further details about training are shared only in the later stages of hiring, so don't expect a full syllabus before you apply.

Protective work is handled by a different agency with its own requirements, and my Secret Service agent guide explains them.

How to make yourself a stronger candidate

  • Keep your record clean. A background investigation and polygraph are part of every hire.
  • Be ready to relocate. Willingness to move to the DC area is a basic requirement.
  • Think about which officer track fits you before you apply, from case officer to targeting or collection management, and read each one's description on the CIA careers site.
  • Write a clear, factual resume. These resume summary examples show how to lead with what you've done.
  • If you served in the military, look at the CIA's veterans routes, as it says previous service could qualify you.

Starting as a student

If you're still at university, the CIA runs year-round paid internship and co-op programs for full-time undergraduates in relevant majors. Students complete at least one 12-week work tour before graduating, and there's a Graduate Studies Program with the same 12-week tour for full-time graduate and doctoral students.

Timing matters here. The CIA asks most students to submit an expression of interest 6 to 12 months before the start date they want, because interns go through the same medical and security process as staff. The Directorate of Operations Internship and the scholarship programs have their own application windows, listed on each program's page, so check those early. If you're aiming for operations work after graduation, an internship is the clearest way to find out whether the lifestyle suits you before you commit.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If what draws you is investigation rather than intelligence, compare the route to becoming a detective, where you'll build cases in your own community.

My verdict

The real job is less movie spy and more patient, discreet work with people and information, often far from home. Search for officer roles, not agent roles, apply from inside the US, and treat the security process as a test of honesty as much as background. If you can live with secrecy about your own career, it's one of the few jobs where that's part of the description.

Federal drug enforcement is a separate career with its own age limit and training, set out in my DEA agent guide.
