Instagram's voice tools sit in the Audio menu after you record a reel: tap Next, then Audio, then Voiceover to record over your clip, and tap Edit under an audio track to add effects to it. For a computer-style voice, add text and switch on Text-to-Speech in Edit video.
If you're looking for a voice changer that turns you into a robot or a chipmunk, Instagram's help pages don't list one as a separate feature. What they do document is three voice tools: voiceovers and audio effects in Reels, text-to-speech voices, and the Voice tool in Instagram's Edits app. Here's how each works.
Instagram's voice tools at a glance
| Tool | Where to find it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Voiceover | Reels: Next, then Audio, then Voiceover | Record your voice over a chosen part of the reel |
| Audio effects | Reels: Edit below an audio track | Add effects to, edit or remove that audio |
| Sound Effects | Reels: Next, then Audio, then Sound Effects | Drop a sound effect into your reel |
| Text-to-Speech | Reels: Edit video, tap your text, then Text-to-Speech | Read your on-screen text aloud in a choice of voices |
| Voice (Edits app) | Edits editing tools | Record a voiceover while following an on-screen script |
How to add a voiceover to an Instagram reel
These are Instagram's steps for the iPhone app:
- Record your reel, then tap Next at the bottom.
- Tap Audio at the bottom.
- Tap Voiceover.
- Use the slider bar at the bottom to choose where the voiceover should start.
- Tap and hold Record while you speak.
- Tap Done at the bottom.
From the same Audio screen you can also tap Music to add a song or Sound Effects to add one, then drag the bars under each type of audio to balance the volume. If a song drowns out your voice, pull the music bar down until your words are clear.
How to add effects to your voice on Instagram
After recording, Instagram says you can tap Edit below each type of audio to add effects, edit or remove the audio. There's a catch in the small print: only some options are available for camera audio, audio from Instagram's music library and sound effects, so you won't see every option on every track.
Instagram also explains how it labels the sound. Audio recorded by your microphone while filming, or that's part of a video you uploaded, shows as Camera Audio on the left. Music from Instagram's library or original audio by another creator appears on the right.
How to use text-to-speech on Instagram Reels
- Add text to your reel.
- Tap Edit video in the bottom left.
- At the bottom, tap the line with your text.
- Tap Text-to-Speech at the bottom.
- Swipe through the voice options and tap to preview them.
- Tap the voice you want, then tap Done. Choose None or Cancel to remove it.
The detail people miss: Instagram says text-to-speech is currently only available in English in select countries where captions are available, and lists the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Ireland and India (English only). If the option is missing for you, check that list before you assume something's wrong with your phone.
Recording a voiceover in the Edits app
Instagram's separate Edits app has a Voice tool that lets you record a voiceover while following an on-screen script, which is handy if you lose your place when you talk to camera. Its editing tools also include Sound FX for sound effects, Captions to generate captions, and a Volume control on each layer to manage whether it includes sound.
Who can reuse your voice
- Public accounts: Instagram says that if your account is public, anyone can reuse your original audio in their reels. To stop that, you can make your account private.
- Meta AI: on a public account, people on Meta AI apps or websites can also create with your original audio. You can switch that off: Profile, Menu, then Sharing and reuse, then the Reels toggle under the Meta AI setting.
- Downloads: a reel with only your original audio downloads with all its audio. If it includes licensed audio or another creator's original audio, all the audio is removed from the download.
Remixes work on the same reuse idea, and I explain how to control them in what remix means on Instagram.

If your voice effects aren't showing
- Update the app. Instagram's Reels help says to update from the App Store or Google Play Store when a sticker or tool is missing.
- Check your location and language for text-to-speech, which is English only in the listed countries.
- Look under Audio after tapping Next, not in the recording screen's tool menu, which holds Music, Effects, Speed and the other camera tools.
- For comparison, TikTok's voice effects work differently, and CapCut voiceovers are another route before you upload.
My verdict
For a talking reel, Instagram's built-in Voiceover with the music turned down is all most people need, and text-to-speech is a quick win if you're in one of the supported countries. Just remember that on a public account your original audio can be reused by others unless you change the settings.
