Best AI Workout Planners (2026): 9 Apps That Plan for You

The best AI workout planners build a plan around your goals, equipment and recovery, then adjust it as you progress. Some are made for gym beginners, some for bodybuilders and powerlifters, and some for home workouts with little kit. Nine apps follow, a couple free to start, and the right one depends on where you train and how much structure you want.

An AI workout planner is supposed to take the thinking out of training. Open the app, see today's session, do it, and let the plan adjust next time. When it works, it's the closest thing to a coach in your pocket.

The nine apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the company's own website, read this week. If you train at home, my guide to back workouts at home pairs well with any of them.

AI workout planners compared

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the provider's page before you sign up.

The plan should get you to two strength days

The NHS says adults should do strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week, and at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week.

That's a sensible way to judge any planner. If it gets you to those two strength days week after week, it's doing its job, however clever or simple it looks, and that's what moves the needle over a year.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

How much should the app decide?

Some planners choose every exercise, set and weight. That's ideal if decisions put you off training, but it can feel rigid if you love certain lifts.

Others suggest a plan you can edit. They suit people who know what they like and want help with progression rather than a full programme.

Whichever you pick, tell it the truth about your equipment and schedule. A plan built for five gym sessions won't help if you can manage three at home, and most apps adjust well once they know.

Questions to answer before you choose

  1. Where will I train most weeks?
  2. How many sessions can I manage each week?
  3. Do I want to edit the plan or follow it?
  4. Does it sync with my watch or health app?
  5. Is there a free plan to start with?
  6. What happens to my history if I cancel?

Signs an AI planner would help

  • You never know what to do at the gym. Let the app decide.
  • Progress has stalled. Try adaptive progression.
  • You train at home with little kit. Pick one that plans around it.
  • You skip sessions. A daily plan helps you show up.

My plain advice on AI workout planners

Pick one app and give it six weeks before you judge it. AI planners learn from what you log, so the first fortnight is often the least useful part.

If you've got any health concerns or haven't exercised for a while, check with your GP before starting a new plan. For kit at home, my guide to home workout equipment for small spaces helps you choose what to buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI workout planner?

It's an app that builds a training plan from your goals, equipment and schedule, then adjusts it based on what you log.

Is there a free AI workout planner?

Some apps offer a free plan or free start. Check each provider's page for what's included.

How many days a week should I strength train?

The NHS says adults should do strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week, alongside other activity.

Are AI workout plans safe for beginners?

They can help beginners get started, but anyone with health concerns should check with a GP first.

Can AI plan home workouts?

Yes. Several apps build plans around the equipment you have at home, including bodyweight-only sessions.

Will an AI planner replace a personal trainer?

It can handle planning and progression, but it can't watch your form or adjust for injuries the way a trainer can.
