Free Word Cloud Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A word cloud generator turns text into an image where the most frequent words appear biggest. Some build a cloud from a document or web page you paste in, and some collect live answers from an audience and grow the cloud on screen as people respond. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Ask a room one question and show the answers as a word cloud, and you've got everyone's attention in seconds. That's why teachers, trainers and presenters use them, and why researchers use the text version to spot themes in survey answers.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you need opening questions, my list of icebreaker questions works well as word cloud prompts.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

A word cloud needs words beside it

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative says complex images can be difficult to understand by many people, especially those with low vision, learning disabilities and limited subject-matter experience. It recommends making a long description available to everyone, for example as part of the main content.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A word cloud is a complex image dressed up as a simple one. Sizes are hard to compare, colours carry no meaning and a screen reader can't read the words inside the picture. Add one sentence next to it that names the top five words in order. It takes thirty seconds, and it's also the line most people will remember from your slide or report.

Text cloud or live audience cloud?

A text cloud is built from something you already have: a document, survey answers or a web page. It's useful for reports, lessons and quick analysis.

A live cloud collects answers from people's phones during a session and grows on screen. It's built for lessons, training, meetings and events.

Some tools do both, but most lean one way. Decide whether your audience will type the words before you choose.

Six checks before you show a word cloud

  1. Have you removed filler words like and, the and very?
  2. Are similar words merged, such as team and teams?
  3. Is the question clear enough to get one-word answers?
  4. Can people join without creating an account?
  5. Will you save the answers as text, not just the image?
  6. Have you named the top words in a sentence nearby?

Signs your word cloud isn't working

  • The biggest word is and. Remove filler words.
  • It's a wall of phrases. Ask for one word.
  • Team and teams compete. Merge them.
  • Nobody can read it. Add a sentence beside it.

Do you make a word cloud generator? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on word clouds that say something

Ask for one word, not a sentence. A question like 'one word for how this week went' gives a cloud with a clear shape, while open questions give a messy wall of phrases. Show the cloud, then ask the room what surprises them about it. That second question is where the useful conversation starts.

If you're building the whole session, my original presentation ideas help you plan the rest of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a word cloud generator?

It's a tool that turns text or live answers into an image where the most frequent words appear biggest.

Are word cloud generators free?

Many are free to use, and several live polling tools include word clouds on a free plan with participant limits. Check the free plan column above.

How do I make a live word cloud?

Use an audience tool, ask a question, share the join link or code and the cloud grows as people answer from their phones.

How do I make word clouds accessible?

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative recommends a long description for complex images, so name the top words in a sentence beside the cloud.

Can I make a word cloud from a document?

Yes. Several tools let you paste text, upload a file or enter a web address to build the cloud.

Why do some words look huge in my word cloud?

Size shows how often a word appears. Remove filler words and merge plurals so the important words are easy to spot.
