A job application tracker keeps every role you've saved, applied for and interviewed for in one place, with dates, contacts and next steps. Some are free browser extensions, some sit inside AI job search tools, and a simple board works if you'd rather build your own. Nine options follow in no particular order.
By week three of a job search, most people can't remember which companies they've applied to, who they spoke to or when they should follow up.
That's when good roles slip away. The nine trackers below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're still working out where to look for roles, my guide to using ChatGPT for your job search pairs well with any of them.
Job trackers compared
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

When a tracker becomes your evidence
GOV.UK says people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance have appointments with a work coach every 1 to 2 weeks, and at these appointments they must show what they've been doing to look for work, for example proof of job applications and interviews.
If you're claiming, an up-to-date tracker is the record you bring to that meeting. Even if you aren't, the habit pays off: a dated log shows which kinds of roles get replies, which go silent, and when it's time to chase.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Spreadsheet, extension or AI job tool?
A spreadsheet or a simple board works when you apply to a handful of roles and like to set things up your own way.
A browser extension saves the job details for you as you browse, which removes most of the copying and pasting.
AI job tools add matching, resume tailoring and sometimes automatic applying, with the tracker built in. They're the better fit when you're applying at volume.
What to log for every application
- The job title, company and link to the advert
- The date you applied and the version of resume you sent
- The name of anyone you spoke to
- Interview dates and who was on the panel
- The date to follow up if you hear nothing
- The outcome, so you can spot patterns
Signs you need a tracker today
- You've applied twice to one role. Log every application.
- You can't name your last interviewer. Record contacts.
- Follow-ups never happen. Set a date on each one.
- Your work coach asks for proof. Keep a dated record.

My plain advice on job application trackers
Set a follow-up date the moment you log an application, then check the tracker at the same time each week. The tool matters far less than the weekly habit, and a polite chase a week after applying often gets a reply.
When the interviews start coming, my list of questions to ask the interviewer helps you finish each one well.
I keep every related walkthrough in the Remote Jobs and Work From Home: 47 Guides to Real Jobs, Pay and Spotting Scams.
Frequently asked questions
What is a job application tracker?
It's a tool that keeps a record of every job you've saved, applied for or interviewed for, with dates, contacts and next steps, so nothing slips.
Is there a free job application tracker?
Yes. Several trackers name a free plan or a free version. Check the free plan column above and confirm on each vendor's site.
Can I just use a spreadsheet?
You can. A spreadsheet works for a small search. Trackers save time by capturing job details from listings and reminding you to follow up.
What should I track in a job search?
Track the role, company, date applied, resume version, contacts, interview dates, follow-up dates and the outcome of each application.
Do I need proof of job applications for JSA?
GOV.UK says that at work coach appointments you must show what you've done to look for work, for example proof of job applications and interviews.
How often should I follow up on an application?
A week after applying is a common point to send a short, polite follow-up if you haven't heard anything.
