The best ESG reporting software collects environmental, social and governance data from across your business and suppliers, maps it to frameworks such as CSRD or ISSB and produces reports an auditor can check. Some tools focus on supply chain data, others on disclosure and assurance, and a few sit inside wider EHS or finance platforms. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
The hardest part of an ESG report usually isn't writing it. It's chasing hundreds of numbers from finance, HR, facilities and suppliers, then proving where each one came from.
ESG reporting software organises that chase. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. My piece on sustainable business practices covers the actions behind the numbers.
ESG reporting tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Why many CSRD deadlines moved
EUR-Lex publishes Directive (EU) 2025/794, often called the stop-the-clock directive. It says the sustainability reporting requirements for companies that were due to report for financial years beginning in 2025 and 2026 should be postponed by two years. That's the stop-the-clock part, and it's why so many timelines you'll read online are out of date.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So many second-wave companies got breathing room. Don't waste it. It's the best time to fix data collection, because the report itself is the easy part once the numbers are clean and traceable.
Data collection first, report second
Look at how each tool gathers data, because that's where you'll spend your time. The good ones let owners in each department enter or upload their own numbers, with evidence attached and an approval step before anything reaches the report.
Then look at mapping. One data point, such as energy use, may feed several frameworks at once, and the tool shouldn't make you enter it twice.
Last, look at the output. Some tools produce the full report, while others export data to your annual report workflow. Pick the one that matches how your finance and legal teams already work.
What to check before you choose
- Which frameworks does it map to today?
- Can department owners enter their own data?
- Does every number keep an audit trail?
- How does it collect supplier data?
- Can it consolidate a group of companies?
- Will your auditor be able to review it inside the tool?
Signs your ESG reporting needs a tool
- Data lives in dozens of spreadsheets. Centralise collection.
- Nobody can trace a number to its source. Add evidence and approvals.
- Supplier requests pile up. Use a supplier portal.
- Each framework means re-entering data. Map once, report many.
Do you make ESG reporting or sustainability tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on ESG reporting software
Before you buy, list the ten data points you struggle with most and ask each vendor to show you how those would be collected, approved and traced in their tool. A demo of a pretty dashboard tells you nothing about the chase.
And keep the report honest. Readers and regulators are getting better at spotting fluff, and they won't give you the benefit of the doubt. My piece on sustainability as strategy shows what real change looks like.
Frequently asked questions
What is ESG reporting software?
It's software that collects environmental, social and governance data, maps it to reporting frameworks and produces reports with an audit trail behind every number.
Did the EU delay CSRD reporting?
Yes, for many companies. Directive (EU) 2025/794 on EUR-Lex says reporting requirements for companies due to report for financial years beginning in 2025 and 2026 should be postponed by two years.
Is ESG reporting software the same as carbon accounting software?
No. Carbon accounting covers emissions. ESG reporting also covers social and governance topics, and many tools do both.
Do small businesses need ESG software?
Many don't yet, but suppliers to large companies are often asked for ESG data, and a simple tool can make those requests far easier to answer.
Which frameworks do ESG tools support?
Common ones include CSRD and its standards, ISSB, CDP and voluntary frameworks. Check the vendor's current list, because it changes often.
How do I collect supplier ESG data?
Some platforms send questionnaires to suppliers and let them respond for free, then pull answers straight into your reporting.
