Databricks vs Fabric: Which Data Platform Fits Your Team?

Choose Microsoft Fabric if your company lives in Microsoft 365 and Power BI and wants one SaaS platform where data engineering, warehousing and reports share OneLake. Choose Databricks if you want an open lakehouse that runs in your own AWS, Azure or Google Cloud account, built on projects such as Apache Spark, Delta Lake and MLflow. You can try both, and it's worth doing: Fabric has a 60-day trial and Databricks has a quota-limited Free Edition.

I read the Databricks introduction and its Free Edition pages, and Microsoft Learn's Fabric overview and trial pages. Both promise one place for data and AI, and they're both serious platforms; they differ on where that place sits and how open it's meant to be.

How Databricks approaches it

Databricks describes itself as an open analytics platform that plugs into the storage and security in your own cloud account and deploys the infrastructure for you. Its docs list the open source projects its employees created: Apache Spark and Structured Streaming, Delta Lake, MLflow, Redash and Unity Catalog. If you'd rather avoid lock-in to a single vendor's storage format, that heritage matters.

The Free Edition is generous for learning but has hard edges. It's serverless only, with one small SQL warehouse, a maximum of 5 concurrent job tasks and up to 3 apps that stop after 24 hours. If you go over your quota, compute shuts down for the rest of the day and, in extreme cases, the month, though your data stays. It comes with no support or service-level agreement.

How Microsoft Fabric approaches it

Microsoft Learn calls Fabric an analytics platform covering ingestion, transformation, real-time stream processing, analytics and reporting. Data Engineering, Data Factory, Data Science, Real-Time Intelligence, Data Warehouse and Databases all run over shared compute and storage, with OneLake as the single data lake and the OneLake Catalog for finding and governing data.

The trial is the easiest way in. Microsoft gives you free access for 60 days to almost everything Fabric offers, on a trial capacity of either 4 or 64 capacity units, plus a Power BI Individual Trial if you don't already have Premium Per User. Microsoft also runs a free Fabric Analyst in a Day workshop.

Getting data in is the other half of the job, covered in my comparison of Kafka and Redpanda.

Five questions for your data team

  1. Is Power BI already your reporting tool? Fabric puts it in the same platform as your data.
  2. Do you need to run on AWS or Google Cloud as well as Azure? Databricks runs on all three.
  3. Will data scientists build models in Spark and MLflow? Databricks is their home ground.
  4. Do you want Microsoft to run the platform as SaaS, or to keep it in your own cloud account?
  5. Run one real pipeline end to end in each trial before anyone signs a contract.

For the governance side, read this guide to Power BI data governance, and this round-up of data analytics tools if you're still mapping options.

My advice on Databricks or Fabric

If your business runs on Microsoft and your analysts already build in Power BI, I'd start with Fabric's 60-day trial; keeping data, pipelines and reports in one Microsoft service is a real simplification. If you have data engineers or scientists, want open formats, or run across more than one cloud, Databricks is the stronger fit, and its Free Edition lets a single person learn it without a sales call. Don't choose on demos: choose on one real pipeline.
