To use Canva Code, select Code on the Canva homepage and describe what you want in the Canva AI tab, such as "Design an interactive exercise tracker", or open Canva AI, type a prompt and select the Code option to make a single element like a quiz or calculator. Refine it by chatting or editing directly, preview it, then publish it as a website or add it to another design.
Canva Code is Canva's way of letting you build things that move and respond, like calculators, quizzes, dashboards and simple landing pages, by describing them instead of writing code. If you already live in Canva, it's the easiest route I know into interactive content.
I've built this guide from Canva's own help centre, read in October 2026.
Two ways to use Canva Code
| Option | Start from | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| A full Code design | Select Code on the Canva homepage | Landing pages, dashboards and portfolios you publish as a responsive website |
| A Code element | Canva AI, then the Code option | A quiz, calculator or chart you drop into a presentation, whiteboard or other design |
How to create a full interactive design
- From the Canva homepage, select Code. The Canva editor opens.
- In the Canva AI tab, describe the design you want.
- Or use the Templates tab to start from an existing design.
- Refine it with Canva AI or by editing directly.
- Select Preview to try it out.
- Publish it as a website when you're happy.
How to make a single interactive element
- On the Canva homepage, select Canva AI.
- Describe the element in the prompt box.
- Select the Code option, then press Enter or the submit button.
- When it's ready, select Use in a design.
- Under Add as an element to, choose the type of design to add it to.
- Ask for changes in the chat box in the side panel.
Prompts that work for small businesses
Canva says Code only takes instructions from what you type, and the more context you give, the better the result. These are the kind of prompts I'd start with:
Copy this prompt
Create an interactive quote calculator for a dog grooming business. Ask for dog size (small, medium, large) and service (bath, full groom, nail trim), then show an estimated price using values I'll enter. Use soft greens and a friendly font.
Copy this prompt
Create a five-question quiz called Which coffee suits you? with a result card at the end recommending one of four drinks. Make the buttons large enough to tap easily on a phone.
Copy this prompt
Design a one-page landing page for a weekend pottery workshop with a short intro, three photo spaces, a timetable and a booking button.
Versions: go back to an earlier one
Every time you change a Code design by prompting, Canva saves a new version in the same chat thread. To find them, open Canva AI, select the Code option under the prompt bar, and your Code chats appear in the sidebar with a code icon next to them. Open a thread, pick a version and select Use in a design to carry on from there.
This is the safety net most people don't know about. If a change goes wrong, you don't need to undo it by hand. Go back a version.
Copying the code
Turn on the Show code toggle in your Code thread and select Copy code. Canva says you can use that code in your own projects, and it doesn't claim copyright over what you create with its AI features, as set out in its AI Product Terms. The catch: the code can be copied, but it can't be exported as a file or edited directly inside Canva.

When a big site won't publish
If your Canva Code website is large or complex, Canva says an oversized widget may stop it publishing. Its suggested fix is to ask Canva AI, in the same chat, to simplify the site and reduce oversized components, or to split it into two smaller sites or pages. Just remember that if you split it, you'll have separate web addresses to manage and share.
Things to know before you rely on it
- Interactivity only works when the design is viewed in Canva or published as a website, not in a downloaded image or PDF.
- Canva Code counts towards your Canva AI usage.
- Only you can see your Canva Code conversations; sharing happens through the design's Share button.
- Admins, teachers and brand designers can choose who in a team or class can use Canva Code.
- It works in all the languages Canva supports, except for users on canva.cn.
Canva also says Code now uses diff-based editing, which means small changes only update the lines that need changing. If nothing seems to happen after a prompt, give it a moment; it's working in the background.
For simpler sites without the interactive parts, my guide to making a website in Canva walks through the standard route, and my Canva tutorial covers the basics. If you'd like help turning tools like this into lead magnets for your business, that's on my work with me page.
My verdict
Canva Code is brilliant for small interactive extras: a price estimator, a quiz for your list, a simple dashboard for a client. Be specific in your prompt, lean on versions instead of fixing things by hand, and keep sites small enough to publish cleanly. I wouldn't build a full business website on it, but as a quick way to add something people can click and play with, it's hard to beat.
Spreadsheets live in Canva too, which I walk through in my guide to using Canva Sheets.
