The Promotions tab in YouTube Studio is where you run and manage YouTube Promote, a simple way to turn your videos and Shorts into YouTube ads without using Google Ads. You pick a goal such as subscribers, views or website clicks, choose locations, languages and interests, and YouTube runs the campaign for you.
It's built for creators who want growth without learning a full ad platform. But there are a few rules, especially around the YouTube Partner Program, that you need to know before you spend a penny.
Everything below comes from YouTube Help, read in October 2026.
Where to find Promotions in YouTube Studio
| Device | Where Promote lives |
|---|---|
| Desktop | The three-dot menu on any of your videos |
| Desktop | The Promote button on the watch page of any of your videos |
| Desktop | The Promotions tab inside Content in YouTube Studio |
| Android | The three-dot menu on any of your videos |
The Promotions tab is the control centre. It's where you see results, including Follow-on Views, and where you manage settings such as the EU political ad declaration.
What YouTube Promote offers
- Reach. Get videos in front of new audiences likely to enjoy them, to drive engagement, subscriptions, views or clicks to your website.
- Simplicity. YouTube says you can launch a promotion in a few clicks, with no complex ad-buying experience needed.
- Targeting. Choose the locations, languages and interests that matter to you.
- Flexibility. Pick the goal: more subscribers, views or website clicks.
Which Promote goal to pick
YouTube frames the choice as more subscribers, more views or more website clicks. Pick by what you'll do with the result. If you're building towards monetisation, an Audience Growth promotion is the one that produces Follow-on Views, which YouTube counts toward YPP. If you sell a product or a service, website clicks put people on your own site. Views alone are the weakest goal unless the video itself carries your call to action.
YouTube Promote vs Google Ads
YouTube describes Promote as a simplified advertising tool powered by Google Ads. It gives you a quick way to buy ads directly on YouTube without the complex campaign options in Google Ads. For advanced targeting and deeper analytics, YouTube suggests building your campaign in Google Ads instead.
One catch worth knowing: promotions you create from YouTube can only be managed on YouTube. They don't appear in Google Ads. If an agency runs your Google Ads, they won't see your Promote campaigns there.
What counts toward the YouTube Partner Program
This is the part most creators get wrong, so here's the short version:
| Result from a promotion | Counts toward YPP eligibility? |
|---|---|
| Watch hours gained through ad campaigns | No |
| Subscribers gained through ad campaigns | No, only organic subscribers count |
| Follow-on Views from Audience Growth promotions | Yes |
Follow-on Views are organic views you get when someone watches more of your videos after seeing your promoted content. Each video they watch counts as one Follow-on View. YouTube says they're only available for Audience Growth promotions, they count toward YPP eligibility, and you can see them in the Promotions tab. If you're tracking how close you are to monetisation, my YouTube monetisation checker helps you keep score.
Does promoting a video hurt its organic reach?
YouTube says no. Promotions don't affect your channel's or a video's organic performance, because organic recommendations are based on how content performs when it's recommended organically, not when it runs as an ad. YouTube also says the views and subscribers you gain through Promote are legitimate.
The EU political ad rule
From 10 October 2025, when new EU rules on political advertising came in, Google stopped allowing political ads in the EU. You can still promote a video that contains an EU political ad, but you have to self-declare it, and the promotion won't be shown to viewers in the EU.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
YouTube adds that from April 2026, creators with active EU impressions since October 2025 who haven't declared their channel-level status see a mandatory dialog when they open the Promotions tab. You can manage your status later under YouTube Studio Settings, then Promotions. YouTube also notes that any content featuring a public office holder, by mention or image, counts as an election ad under Google Ads policies.
AI labels on Promote campaigns
- You can add an AI label when you create a promotion, at the Video stage, if AI generated or altered the content.
- It's entirely manual. YouTube's systems won't detect or apply it for you.
- You can edit or update it on your Promotions page after launch.
- It's only shown to viewers in the EU, India and New York, and only when the video runs as an ad.
How I'd use YouTube Promote
- Pick a video that already does well organically, so you're promoting a winner.
- Choose an Audience Growth goal if you care about Follow-on Views.
- Keep targeting tight: the locations and languages your audience lives in.
- Add the AI label if any part of the video was AI generated or altered.
- Check Follow-on Views in the Promotions tab, not just paid views.

My verdict
YouTube Studio Promotions is a fair way for creators to buy reach without wrestling with Google Ads. Just go in knowing the trade-offs: paid subscribers and watch hours don't count toward YPP, campaigns live only inside YouTube, and EU political content needs declaring. Promote videos that already work, use Audience Growth for Follow-on Views, and judge success on the organic viewing it sparks.
