Lens Studio is Snap's tool for building augmented reality Lenses, the effects people use in the Snapchat camera. Lenses made in Lens Studio can be shared to Snapchat, to Snap's Spectacles glasses, and to other mobile and web apps through Snap's Camera Kit.
You don't need to be a developer to start. Snap says its GenAI Suite lets you build Lenses from a text or image prompt with no coding, while experienced builders can go deep with JavaScript and TypeScript.
Here's what Lens Studio does, who it's for and how your Lens reaches people, from Snap's Lens Studio page and Snapchat Support, read in October 2026.
What you can build in Lens Studio
Snap describes Lens Studio as an AR-first developer platform. The examples it gives:
- Selfie Lenses that change how people look or what's around them.
- Shoppable try-on experiences, where people see a product on themselves.
- World Lenses that connect people with the space around them.
- Shared experiences on Spectacles, using Connected Lenses and Snap's Sync Framework.
The main Lens Studio features
| Feature | What Snap says it does |
|---|---|
| GenAI Suite | Creates custom ML models, 2D and 3D assets from a text or image prompt, with no coding needed |
| Plugins | Extend the editor, or build your own |
| Coding support | JavaScript, TypeScript and package management for complex projects |
| Spectacles tools | Connected Lenses, Sync Framework and multiple preview windows |
| AI Assistant | Answers questions using all of Snap's learning materials |
| Camera Kit | Puts your Lenses into your own mobile and web apps |
Who Lens Studio is for
Snap says it builds Lens Studio for beginners and advanced developers alike. In practice, I'd split it like this. If you're a brand, Lens Studio lets you make a branded Lens or a product try-on. If you're a creator, it's a way to build a following and possibly earn, because Snap runs a Lens Creator Rewards Program and a Creator Marketplace where businesses find Lens creators. If you're a developer, Camera Kit lets you put Snap's AR into your own app.
Snap says over 330,000 Lens Creators use it, and there's a Discord community for help and meetups.
How Snapchat decides who sees your Lens
Building a Lens is half the job. Getting it seen is the other half. Snapchat Support explains the steps:
- Moderation. Lenses are checked against the Community Guidelines, by automatic moderation and by trained human reviewers. Sexually explicit content, violence, dangerous behaviour, illegal activity and false information aren't allowed.
- Tagging. Snap categorises each Lens with tags, such as sports, makeup or dogs. Both people and computers help with this.
- Personalisation. Snapchat's algorithm learns the themes each person likes and prioritises them, while still showing a variety.
So the clearer your Lens's theme, the easier it'll be for Snap to tag it and show it to the right people. A Lens that tries to be everything is harder to place.
What Snapchatters can do with your Lens
Once your Lens is live, people can share it with a friend from the Camera screen using the share button, though Snap notes that not all Lenses are shareable. They can also report a Lens through the information icon, or remove one they've unlocked from their carousel. Reports go to Snap's moderation team, which is one more reason to stay well inside the guidelines.
Lens Studio for brands: what's worth building
Snap points brands towards two things in particular: shoppable try-on experiences and Lenses advertisers can use in Snapchat Ads. A try-on Lens works when the product changes how someone looks, such as glasses, make-up, hats or jewellery. A playful branded Lens works when you want people to share your brand with friends, because a Lens travels in Snaps between people rather than sitting in a feed.
If your product doesn't change how anyone looks, think about a World Lens instead, one that places something in the room. Snap gives connecting with the world around you as one of the core uses, alongside selfie and shopping Lenses.
Lens Studio and Camera Kit: taking Lenses beyond Snapchat
Camera Kit is the part many businesses miss. Snap says Lenses built in Lens Studio can be shared to mobile and web apps with Camera Kit, so a Lens isn't locked inside Snapchat. If you have your own app or website experience, the same Lens can live there too. Snap frames it as a way to grow your business with the developers who integrate Camera Kit and the advertisers on Snapchat.

How to get started
- Download Lens Studio from Snap's Lens Studio page.
- Start with a simple selfie Lens or try the GenAI Suite with a text prompt.
- Use the AI Assistant when you get stuck.
- Test your Lens in Snapchat before you share it widely.
- Give it a clear theme so it's easy for Snap to tag.
If you're new to Lenses as a user, my guide on how to use Snapchat filters and Lenses shows how people find and apply them in the app. And if you're a brand deciding whether a Lens is worth making, my breakdown of Snapchat's marketing strategy explains why the camera sits at the centre of everything Snap does.
My verdict
Lens Studio is one of the most capable creative tools any social platform offers. The GenAI Suite lowers the bar for beginners, Camera Kit gives developers a reason to use it beyond Snapchat, and Spectacles support makes it the way into Snap's AR glasses. Pick one clear theme, follow the guidelines and test in the app first. That's how your Lens gets tagged well and shown to the people who'll use it.
Lenses can run on Snap's AR glasses, covered in our Snapchat Spectacles guide.
