Ineligible for recommendation on TikTok means your video won't be shown on the For You feed. It hasn't been removed: people can still find it through search or by going to your profile, and you can appeal if you think TikTok got it wrong.
TikTok says it does this for content that may not suit a broad audience. Its examples include unoriginal or recycled videos, shocking or graphic content, mature themes and risky challenges.
Below is what each reason means, where TikTok shows you the label, how appeals work, and what to change on your next video. The facts come from TikTok's Community Guidelines and Creator Academy, read in October 2026.
What ineligible for recommendation means, in plain English
The For You feed is where TikTok recommends videos to people who don't follow you. TikTok keeps eligibility standards for it, and anything that doesn't meet them is made ineligible for the FYF.
That's different from a removal or a ban. TikTok's own words are that even if a video doesn't make it to the FYF, people may still find it through search or by going to a creator's account. Your followers can still find it. Strangers just won't be served it.
The reasons TikTok gives
TikTok's Creator Academy lists these as examples of content that may be left out of the For You feed.
| Reason | What TikTok means by it |
|---|---|
| Unoriginal content | Content that feels recycled, spammy or not right for TikTok, including videos borrowed from other places without a fresh spin |
| Shocking and graphic content | Content too shocking or graphic for everyone's feed. TikTok may also add a notice so viewers choose whether to watch |
| Mature content | Content that isn't age-appropriate or discusses adult topics |
| Dangerous activity or challenges | Videos that might encourage risky behaviour, including filming while driving |
There's also one rule based on the creator rather than the video. TikTok says content from creators under 16 won't be eligible for recommendation to people they don't know.
Why the same topic can stop being recommended
This is the insight most creators miss. TikTok says its system is built to show people a wide range of content, so it aims not to repeatedly recommend content that could lead to a negative experience. Its examples are extreme fitness or dieting, sexual suggestiveness, sadness and overgeneralised mental health advice.
So a video on one of those themes might be fine on its own, and a long run of them can still be held back. If you post in health, fitness or wellbeing, vary your angle and keep the advice specific.
Educational content can still be held back
This one surprises people who make news, health or awareness videos. TikTok's enforcement rules describe public interest exceptions for documentary, educational, medical or scientific, counterspeech, satirical and artistic content. Even when TikTok allows a video under one of those exceptions, it says it might still make it ineligible for the FYF, add a warning screen or add a context label.
So a video can be allowed to stay up and still not be recommended. TikTok suggests using captions, stickers or a voiceover to make the purpose of that kind of video clear.
| What happened | Where TikTok tells you | Can you appeal? |
|---|---|---|
| Video made ineligible for the FYF | In the TikTok analytics tool | Yes |
| Video removed | TikTok says it seeks to explain why it was removed | Yes |
| Account banned | A message in the app | Yes |
Where to see if your video is ineligible
TikTok's Community Guidelines say that if your content is made ineligible for the FYF or otherwise restricted, the information appears in the TikTok analytics tool. Check your video's analytics rather than guessing from the view count.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That matters because TikTok also says a video that isn't getting many views doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule. Low views and an ineligible label are two different things. My guide to the TikTok analytics dashboard shows where to look.
How to appeal an ineligible for recommendation decision
TikTok says that if your content was made ineligible for the FYF, or otherwise restricted, and you believe it was an error, you may appeal the decision. Once your appeal is filed, you can view its status in the in-app Safety Center.
- Open the video's analytics and read what TikTok says about the restriction.
- Check the video honestly against the examples above.
- If you think it's a mistake, submit an appeal from the option TikTok shows you.
- Track the result in the Safety Center in the app.
Appeal when the label is wrong, not when you'd simply like more views. If the reason fits, an appeal won't change much, and your next video is a better use of your time.
What to change on your next video
- Make it yours. Film your own footage or add a real twist if you're reacting to someone else's clip.
- Keep it suitable for a wide audience if you want For You reach.
- Show safety on camera. Never film while driving or doing something risky.
- Vary your themes if you post about diet, fitness or mental health.
If whole batches of your videos are struggling, not just one, it's worth checking your account status too. My guide to why a TikTok account is under review covers that side of things.
My verdict
An ineligible for recommendation label isn't the end of a video. It's still on your profile and in search, and you can appeal if it's a mistake. Check the reason in your analytics, appeal only when the reason doesn't fit, and put most of your energy into the next video. Original footage, a broad audience in mind and a little variety in your topics will keep far more of your work eligible than any appeal will.
