Best News APIs (2026): 11 APIs for News Articles Compared

The best news APIs deliver headlines, articles and metadata from thousands of publishers into your app, dashboard or AI project automatically. Some offer free tiers for prototypes, while others are built for brand monitoring, risk tracking and feeding AI agents. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

Keeping up with your industry by hand means dozens of tabs and a nagging feeling you've missed something. A news API does the reading for your software, so it can alert you, summarise stories or show the latest coverage right inside your own product.

The eleven news APIs below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the provider's own website, read this week. If you gather news to share with your own audience, my piece on why content curation is useful for your business explains how to do it well.

News APIs side by side

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free allowance or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Where to start for your project

  • A quick prototype or side project: NewsAPI.org or The News API.
  • Full article text and an archive: GNews.
  • Feeding news into AI agents: NewsCatcher.
  • Brand and competitor monitoring: Perigon.
  • News alongside wider web data: Webz.io.

The UK Intellectual Property Office says fair dealing for the purpose of reporting current events is allowed for any type of copyright work other than a photograph. That exception has limits, and it isn't a licence to copy whole articles.

So think about what you'll show. Headlines, short extracts and links back to the source are very different from republishing full articles or news photos, and some API plans restrict how you can display what they return.

Headlines and snippets versus full article text

Headline feeds are light, quick and fine for alerts, dashboards and simple widgets. They tell you what's been published and where, which is often all a monitoring tool needs.

Full text is what AI summaries, sentiment tracking and research tools need, because they have to read the story itself. It usually comes with stricter terms, so check what you're allowed to store and show.

Questions to ask before you pick a news API

  1. Which countries and languages does it cover?
  2. Does it return full article text or only snippets?
  3. How far back does the archive go?
  4. How quickly do new stories appear?
  5. Can I filter by source, topic or company?
  6. What am I allowed to display publicly?

Signs you need a news API

  • You read twenty sites every morning. Let software do the scan.
  • You hear about competitor news late. Set up alerts.
  • Your newsletter takes hours to research. Pull stories automatically.
  • Your AI tool doesn't know today's news. Feed it a news API.

Do you make a news API or news data service? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a news API

Search for ten stories you know were published in your niche recently and see which API finds them. Coverage of small trade publications and local news varies far more than the big headline numbers suggest, and that's usually where the useful stories live.

Then decide what you'll show people and what stays behind the scenes. If you're building alerts or summaries for subscribers, my guide to AI for newsletter operators shows where automation helps and where your own judgement still matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a news API?

A news API is a service that sends news headlines, articles and details such as source, date and topic to your software automatically.

Are there free news APIs?

Several providers offer free tiers or free allowances for testing and small projects. The free plan column above shows what each provider's own site says.

Can I republish articles from a news API?

Usually not in full. Copyright still applies, and UK fair dealing for reporting current events has limits and excludes photographs.

Do news APIs include full article text?

Some do and some only return headlines and snippets. Check before you build anything that needs to read the whole story.

Can I use a news API to monitor my brand?

Yes. Many news APIs let you search for company names, people and keywords, and some are built for monitoring.

How current is the news in these APIs?

It varies by provider and plan. Some update within minutes, while others are slower, and some plans may delay results.
