Udemy doesn't offer one fixed free trial for everyone. Its Personal Plan subscription sometimes starts with a free trial as a promotion, and Udemy says the length is shown at sign-up and eligibility is at its discretion. Udemy Business Team Plan has free trials in most regions, limited to one per organisation. Single courses have no trial, but most come with a 30-day refund instead.
Udemy confuses people because it sells two different things: one-off courses you keep for life, and subscriptions that give you a big library for as long as you pay. The trial rules, and the refund rules, are completely different for each, so it's worth knowing which one you're looking at before you hand over a card.
Udemy's three options compared
| Option | Free trial? | Refund rules | Price as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single course | No | Most purchases can be refunded within 30 days | $19.99 to $199.99, one-time |
| Personal Plan | Only when offered as a promotion | No refunds on subscriptions unless the law requires one | Starting at $13.00 per month |
| Team Plan (Udemy Business) | Yes in most regions, one per organisation | All purchases final and non-refundable | $360.00 per user per year, for 2 to 50 people |
How the Personal Plan free trial works
Personal Plan is Udemy's subscription. Udemy says it gives access to over 28,000 top courses, plus skill assessments, labs and AI role play practice. When a trial is on offer, you'll see it during checkout. Udemy's terms say three things about it:
- The length of the trial is specified during sign-up, so check it on screen before you confirm.
- Udemy decides who's eligible at its sole discretion and can limit access or shorten the trial, and it can end a trial if it decides you aren't eligible.
- At the end of the trial you're charged for your next billing cycle, and the plan renews automatically unless you cancel first.
What you can try inside Personal Plan
Udemy lists the following on its Personal Plan page, so these are the things to test during a trial week:
- 600+ skill assessments to show where your gaps are.
- 1,800+ AI role play scenarios with instant feedback.
- 180+ in-course lab workspaces for hands-on technical practice.
- 12,000+ certification prep courses and practice tests, including for AWS, Microsoft and CompTIA exams.
Udemy also says many companies have learning budgets that may cover Personal Plan, so check with your employer before paying yourself.
If there's no trial showing, the first payment is taken as soon as you subscribe. The Personal Plan page says it's billed monthly or annually and you can cancel anytime.
The catch: subscriptions aren't covered by the 30-day refund
Udemy's well known 30-day refund applies to individual course purchases. Its terms say subscription plans aren't eligible. If you forget to cancel a Personal Plan trial and get charged, Udemy says it can't refund subscription payments made on Udemy.com unless applicable law requires it, and there are no refunds for part-used periods.
Even on single courses, the refund isn't unconditional. Udemy may give you a refund credit instead of a refund to your card, and it can refuse if you've watched a notable amount of the course or refunded it before.
How to cancel a Udemy trial before you're charged
- Log in on Udemy.com and open the drop-down menu at the top right.
- Go to your Subscriptions page. It shows your trial length and the date it ends.
- Find the subscription and click Cancel trial.
- Check the page again to confirm the status has changed.
In the app, tap Account, then Subscriptions or Manage subscription. If you started the trial through the App Store or Google Play, Udemy says it can't cancel it for you, so cancel through your Apple or Google account settings. After cancelling a paid plan, you keep access until the last day of your billing period, and your Udemy account stays open, along with any courses you bought separately.
Udemy Business: the Team Plan trial
If you're thinking about training for staff, the Team Plan trial is the one to look at. Udemy's help centre says:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Free trials are available in most regions, but only one per organisation. Once anyone in your company starts one, no further trials are allowed.
- The account admin takes up a licence, so buying 5 seats means you plus four team members.
- Depending on your region, the minimum is 2 or 5 licences and the maximum is 20 to 50.
- It's an annual plan, paid in full by card online, with no monthly option and no refunds.
- If you'd rather skip the trial, there's a buy now option under the Free Trial button.
Agree internally who'll run the trial before anyone signs up, because the one-per-organisation rule means a junior colleague testing it on a whim uses up your only go.
Trial or single course: which should you pick?
If you need one specific course, buy it. You keep it for life and you've got 30 days to change your mind. If you want to explore lots of topics or prepare for a certification with practice tests, a Personal Plan trial makes more sense, as long as you treat the end date as a hard deadline. You can compare it against other course platforms worth a look, and I've also covered whether Udemy is legit if you're new to it.
My verdict
Grab a Personal Plan free trial when Udemy offers you one, but cancel a couple of days early, because there's no refund safety net on subscriptions. For a single skill, the one-off course with its 30-day refund is the calmer choice. For a team, plan the Team Plan trial carefully, since you only get one.
