The quickest free way to make a GIF is to upload a short video to Adobe Express's video to GIF converter, pick a size and download it. Canva's free GIF maker is better if you want to add text, stickers or animation, and on iPhone you can build a Shortcut that turns your latest photos into a GIF. All three are free to use.
A GIF is still the easiest way to show a quick product demo in an email, a reaction in a team chat or a looping clip on a landing page. You don't need Photoshop for any of that. What you need is to pick the right tool for where the GIF is going, because each one has its own limits on length and size.
Which free GIF maker should you use?
| Tool | Start from | Best for | Limit worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Express | A video | Turning a clip into a GIF fast | Videos up to 1 minute long |
| Canva | A video, photos or a template | Branded GIFs with text and animation | Canva suggests clips of 15 to 30 seconds and files under 100 MB |
| iPhone Shortcuts | Your latest photos | Quick GIFs without any app download | You build the shortcut once, then reuse it |
Method 1: Adobe Express video to GIF
Adobe says the converter works the same on desktop and mobile, and you can choose any video up to 1 minute long.
- Open Adobe Express's free video to GIF converter.
- Upload a video from your device.
- Choose the size: large for a high-quality GIF, medium for social media, or small for a GIF that's easy to share anywhere.
- Change the shape to square, horizontal or vertical if you need to, then drag the GIF to fit the new frame.
- Download your GIF, or keep editing it in Adobe Express.
The size option matters more than it looks. A large GIF in an email can be slow to load, so I'd use medium or small for anything going into a newsletter.
Method 2: Canva's free GIF maker
Canva is the one to use when the GIF needs words on it, like a sale announcement or a how-to step. Canva says you can make a GIF from videos or images, add text, frames and effects, and animate elements.
- Open Canva in your browser or the app and start a design, or pick a template sized for where you'll post it.
- Upload your video or images, or drag them into the editor.
- Add text and stickers, then select an element and choose Animate to give it movement.
- Click Share, then Download, and select GIF as the file type.
Canva's own tips for a good result: keep the file under 100 MB and use a clip that's 15 to 30 seconds long, the shorter the better. Canva also explains why GIFs can look a little grainy: the format is limited to 256 colours, so some quality loss is normal when you convert a video. My step-by-step on making a GIF in Canva goes into templates and animation styles.
Method 3: Make a GIF on iPhone with Shortcuts
Apple's own example of a shortcut is one that shares an animated GIF. It uses three actions: Get Latest Photos grabs the latest photos you took, Make GIF turns them into an animated GIF, and Send Message sends it to the people you choose. You can build the same idea yourself:
- Open the Shortcuts app and tap the add button.
- Tap New Shortcut, then Rename, and call it something like Make GIF.
- Tap Add Action and add Get Latest Photos.
- Add the Make GIF action.
- Add Send Message if you want to send the GIF straight away, as Apple's example does.
- Tap the test button at the bottom of the editor to run it.
To find each action, Apple says you tap a category such as Media, then tap the action in the list. Take a quick burst of photos first, run the shortcut and you've got a GIF without downloading anything. It's handy for showing a product from several angles.
Adding a GIF to a presentation or email
Once you've made it, a GIF behaves like an image almost everywhere. You can drop it into a slide deck, an email builder or a web page and it will loop on its own. For slides, my guide on adding a GIF to PowerPoint shows where it goes and how to resize it without stretching it.
Where Photoshop fits
If you already pay for Photoshop and want frame-by-frame control, it's still the most precise tool. I've covered it separately in how to make a GIF in Photoshop. For most business uses, though, the free tools above are faster.

Tips for GIFs that work in business
- Keep it short. A few seconds that loop cleanly beats thirty seconds that drag.
- Show one thing. One feature, one step or one reaction per GIF.
- Make the first frame clear on its own, so the message lands even before the loop starts.
- Check the file size before you send it. Smaller loads faster on phones.
- Add text for silent viewing. GIFs have no sound, so the message has to be visual.
My verdict
If you've got a video and want a GIF in under a minute, use Adobe Express. If the GIF is part of your marketing and needs your brand colours and a headline, use Canva. If you're on your phone and just want to turn a few photos into something that moves, build the Shortcut once and you'll use it for years. You don't need to pay for any of it to make a GIF that does the job.
Photos taken on an iPhone sometimes need converting first, and our HEIC to JPG walkthrough covers it.
