To use Replit, create a free account, start a new chat, choose Website as the output and select Free Mode. Describe one clear outcome, what visitors must be able to do and what not to build yet. Replit's Agent builds the app, then you test it in Preview and ask for one improvement at a time.
Replit has changed from a place to write code into a place to describe apps and have its Agent build them. Its own beginner guide promises a first working app in about ten minutes using Free Mode, which picks the model for you. The trick is in how you write the first prompt, so that's where this guide spends most of its time.
Step 1: Create an account and start a Website
- Sign up for a Replit account.
- Start a new chat and choose Website as the artifact. If your prompt box shows an Output menu, open it and select Website.
- If there's no Output menu, select Add attachment, then Create something new, then Website. On desktop you can also hover over New in the sidebar and choose Website.
- Open the mode selector and choose Free.
You can just ask Replit for a website in plain words, but Replit says selecting Website first makes what you want explicit, which saves the Agent guessing.
Step 2: Write a prompt with boundaries
Replit's guide teaches a loop: describe one useful outcome, add success criteria you can check, set boundaries for what not to build yet, test, then ask for one focused improvement. A prompt built that way looks like this:
Copy this prompt
Build a simple website for my local yoga studio where visitors can browse this week's classes, open a class to see the details, and request a spot with their name and email. Show a clear confirmation after they submit.
Success: I can browse classes, open one, submit a request and see the confirmation. It works on a phone-sized screen.
Don't add logins, payments, a database or any integrations yet.
That last line matters more than it looks. Replit says postponing login, data, payments and integrations keeps the first build focused, and you add them once the core works.
Step 3: Let the Agent build, then test like a visitor
Send the prompt and follow the progress in chat. The Agent plans the app, creates it, starts it and checks the result. Replit warns that Free Mode may take a few minutes for a complete first build. When Preview is running, use the app the way a customer would:
- Click through every page and button.
- Submit the form and check you see the confirmation.
- Resize Preview to a phone-sized width.
- Compare what you see against your success criteria.
If something's broken, describe the symptom to the Agent, such as the confirmation never appears after I click submit, rather than trying to diagnose the code yourself. That's Replit's own advice, and it works.
Step 4: Improve one thing at a time
Once the basics work, ask for a single clear change, keep the visual style and say what not to add. For example: add a page showing the classes I've requested in this session, keep the existing design and don't add login or a database. Test again after each change. Replit calls this the core loop: prompt, build, test and refine.
When you're ready for more, the natural next steps are login for accounts, a database so data persists, payments and integrations such as calendars or email confirmations. Several of those need a paid plan, which is the next thing to understand.
If Replit recommends a higher mode for a more complex request, it's your choice whether to switch. Before you do, try splitting the request into two or three smaller steps and testing after each one, because smaller asks are easier to check and fix.
A few more habits help on any Replit build: keep a short note of the prompts that worked, describe problems by what you see on screen, and resist adding five features in one message. Each focused request gives the Agent a clear target and gives you a clear thing to test.

What the free Starter plan covers, and its catch
The Starter plan is free, with daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap and monthly credits for cloud use. Here's what Replit's docs say it includes and leaves out, as of October 2026:
| On Starter (free) | Needs Core or Pro |
|---|---|
| Lite build for quick, focused edits | Full build, where the Agent works with more autonomy |
| One free published app | More published apps |
| Designs on Design Canvas | Turning a design into an app with a backend |
| Web and mobile app types | Other types, such as slide decks and data visualisations |
| A Made with Replit badge | Removing the badge, Plan Mode and third-party connectors |
The catch: Replit says your free published link automatically goes down after 30 days. So Starter is fine for learning and testing ideas, but not for a page your customers rely on. The badge on free apps also carries your referral link. On paid plans, Replit's pricing page lists Core at $20 a month or $18 a month billed annually, and Pro at $100 a month or $90 billed annually, in US dollars, as of October 2026.

My verdict
Replit is one of the quickest ways for a non-developer to see an idea working, and the boundary line in your first prompt is the single best habit to copy. Learn on the free plan, but move to Core before you send customers to anything, because of the 30-day rule. Frequently asked questions
Is Replit free to use?
Yes. The Starter plan is free and includes daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap, monthly cloud credits and one free published app.
How long does a free Replit app stay online?
Replit's docs say the published link on the free Starter plan automatically goes down after 30 days.
What is Free Mode in Replit?
Free Mode uses intelligent model routing to choose the AI model for you. Replit's beginner guide uses it to build a first app.
Can I remove the Made with Replit badge?
Not on the free plan. Removing the badge needs a Core plan or above.
What should my first Replit prompt include?
One outcome, what visitors must be able to do, success criteria you can check and a list of things not to build yet, such as login or payments.
