Yes, Hugging Face is free to use. You can create an account, browse and download models and datasets, and share your own work on the Hub for free. Hugging Face's pricing page also lists free CPU Basic hardware for Spaces and free ZeroGPU access with a quota. PRO, Team and Enterprise plans add more storage, more ZeroGPU quota and included inference credits.
Hugging Face is the place most people go to find open AI models. It hosts models, datasets and Spaces, which are small apps that let you try a model in your browser. If you've ever downloaded an open model to run locally or played with an AI demo someone shared, there's a good chance it came from Hugging Face. Here's what you can do there without a plan, and when a paid one starts to make sense.
What's free on Hugging Face
- Browsing, downloading and using public models and datasets on the Hub
- Creating a profile and sharing your own models, datasets and Spaces
- Trying other people's Spaces in your browser
- Hosting a Space on CPU Basic hardware, listed as 2 vCPU and 16 GB of memory at no charge
- ZeroGPU Spaces, which give dynamic access to powerful graphics cards free within a quota
Hugging Face describes the Hub as the central place to explore, experiment, collaborate and build with machine learning, and says you can share your work and build your own ML profile there. For learning and testing, that's a lot for nothing.
Free vs PRO at a glance
| Feature | Free account | PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Hub access, models and datasets | Yes | Yes |
| CPU Basic Spaces | Free | Free |
| ZeroGPU | Free within a quota | 8x the quota and highest queue priority |
| Private storage | Standard allowance | 10x private storage |
| Public storage | Standard allowance | 2x public storage |
| Inference Providers | Not listed | Included monthly inference credits |
| Extras | None | Spaces Dev Mode, personal blog publishing, private dataset viewer, early features, PRO badge |
It's worth saying what Hugging Face isn't, too. It isn't a chatbot like ChatGPT, and it isn't one AI tool. It's a library and hosting platform for thousands of them, so the free account gives you access to the shelves rather than a single finished product.
Spaces: the free part most people use
Spaces are the easiest way to show an AI demo to a client or your team. You can build one with Gradio or Docker and host it on the free CPU Basic hardware. For anything that needs a graphics card, ZeroGPU gives you dynamic access to high-end graphics hardware free, within a quota. When your demo is busy or needs more, you can pay for dedicated hardware by the hour, and Hugging Face also mentions community GPU grants for side projects.
Where the free account stops
The free account is for exploring and sharing. You'll feel the limits if you store a lot of private models, rely heavily on ZeroGPU, or want to call hosted models through an API without managing them yourself. That's what PRO is for: more ZeroGPU quota and queue priority, more storage, and included credits for Inference Providers.
Teams and companies have separate Team and Enterprise plans for organisation features, and storage beyond the included allowance is priced per terabyte, with public repositories cheaper than private ones, according to the pricing page.
Free ways a small business can use it
You don't need to be a developer to get value from the free account. Marketers use Spaces to try image, voice and text tools before paying for a commercial version. Consultants build a quick demo for a client pitch and share the link. Anyone curious about a new open model can test it in the browser the day it's released, long before it turns up in their usual apps. And if you're comparing models for a project, the model cards show what each one was built for and how it's licensed, all in one place.
Once you have picked a model, my guide to whether Ollama is free covers how to run it on your own machine.
How to start on Hugging Face for free
- Create a free account on Hugging Face.
- Search the Hub for the kind of model you need, such as text generation or image generation.
- Read the model card, including the licence, before you use it in your business.
- Try the model in a Space, or download it to run on your own computer.
- Create your own Space on CPU Basic if you want to share a demo.
If you're new to the platform, my explainer on what Hugging Face is covers the basics. To run the models you find there on your own machine, my guide on how to use Ollama is the easiest starting point.
What a free account can't do
A free account won't give you private, production-grade hosting for a model your customers rely on. Busy apps need paid hardware or dedicated inference endpoints, which Hugging Face describes as secure, autoscaling and production-ready with no cold starts. Plan for that cost before you promise a client a live AI feature built on a free Space.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
To run those models locally, compare the two main tools in my LM Studio and Ollama comparison.
The licence question
Free to download doesn't always mean free to use commercially. Every model on the Hub has its own licence on its model card, and some restrict business use. My page on where to download free AI models explains the licence types you'll see and what they allow.
My verdict
Hugging Face is free for almost everything a small business needs to explore open AI: finding models, testing them in Spaces and sharing a demo. Stay on the free account until you're hosting busy demos or calling models through the API regularly. And read the licence on every model card before it goes anywhere near client work.
