Yes, Adobe Scan is free. Adobe says the app is completely free to download, and you can scan documents to PDF, use text recognition and share your scans without paying. Adobe's help pages list Premium features such as combining files, exporting to other formats, password protection, compression, editing text in scans and the AI Assistant, plus a higher OCR limit and more cloud storage.
Adobe Scan turns your phone into a document scanner. Point it at a receipt, contract, whiteboard or business card and it saves a clean PDF. For small business owners and freelancers it's one of the easiest ways to go paperless, and the free version covers most of what people use it for. Here's the line between free and Premium.
What you get free
Adobe's scanner app page describes these as part of the free app:
- Capturing documents, receipts, notes, forms, business cards and whiteboards as PDFs
- Automatic boundary detection and capture modes for different kinds of document
- Perspective correction, sharpening, and removal of glare and shadows
- OCR (text recognition), which makes scanned PDFs searchable
- Markup tools for drawings and shapes, and saving as JPEG
- Sharing by link or email, or uploading to your cloud apps
- Suggested file names and dates, and custom folders
Adobe also says you can save to local storage, your Adobe account, or a connected service like Dropbox or Google Drive, and sign in with an Adobe ID to reach the same files on desktop and mobile through the Acrobat web app.
What Adobe Scan Premium adds
Adobe's subscription help page for Adobe Scan on Android lists these Premium features:
| Premium feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Combine files | Merge up to 20 files into a single PDF |
| Export PDF to other formats | Turn a scan into an editable file |
| High-speed scan | Capture multi-page documents faster |
| Edit text in scans | Change text in scanned documents, including while saving |
| Password protection | Lock your scans |
| Compress files | Make scans smaller to share |
| AI Assistant | Use Adobe's AI features on your documents |
The two limits worth knowing
Two numbers on that help page matter for free users. Premium increases the OCR service limit from 5 pages to 100 pages, and raises cloud storage from 5 GB to 20 GB. So if you scan long documents and need them all searchable, or you keep a lot of scans in Adobe's cloud, those are the limits you'll feel first.
Adobe also says a free 7-day trial of Premium is charged automatically when it ends, and you need to cancel in the store where you bought it, such as Google Play, to avoid that.
How to scan a document for free
- Install Adobe Scan from your phone's app store.
- Open the app and point the camera at your document; it detects the edges.
- Capture each page, then review and adjust the crop if needed.
- Save the PDF; text recognition runs so you can search it later.
- Share the file, or save it to your Adobe account, your phone or a connected cloud service.
If you're on an iPhone and don't want another app, my guide on how to scan a document on iPhone shows the built-in option.
If you'd rather not rely on Adobe's cloud, remember that Adobe lets you save scans to your phone or to a connected Dropbox or Google Drive account instead. That keeps your files where the rest of your business documents live, and it means the 5 GB Adobe cloud limit on the free app matters much less.
Once a scan is saved as a PDF, you can turn a PDF into an editable Word file for free.
Adobe Scan and Acrobat
Adobe Scan works alongside Acrobat. Adobe says you can open scans in Acrobat on desktop, web or mobile to fill in forms, sign, add comments and review with others. Acrobat Reader is free for viewing, annotating and signing PDFs, and Adobe's help pages note that an Acrobat Pro subscription also gives you Premium features across its mobile apps, including Scan.
My page on whether Adobe Acrobat is free explains where Reader ends and Acrobat Pro begins. If you want to compare scanner apps before choosing, my roundup of the best free PDF scanner app options covers the alternatives.

Getting the best scans for free
Most problems with scans come from the photo rather than the app. Put the document on a dark, flat surface so the edges stand out, and scan in good, even light to avoid shadows across the page. Hold the phone directly above the paper rather than at an angle, even though the app corrects perspective, because the text recognition works best on a straight, sharp image. For receipts, flatten them first, as creases can confuse the edge detection.
Name scans clearly as you save them, using the client or supplier name and the date, and keep them in folders by year or by client. When tax time comes or a client asks for a copy, you'll find it in seconds.
Who the free version suits
The free app suits anyone who mainly needs to capture receipts, sign-up forms, contracts or notes and send them on. It's less suited to someone who regularly needs to merge many scans into one file, convert them into editable documents, or make long documents fully searchable, because those are Premium jobs.
If those scans also need signatures, check whether Adobe Sign is free.
My verdict
Adobe Scan is free for what most small businesses need: clean, searchable PDFs from a phone. Use the free app until you find yourself needing to merge, export or password-protect scans regularly. If you try the 7-day Premium trial, set a reminder to cancel before it renews.
