Is Nano Banana Free? What You Get in the Gemini App

Yes, Nano Banana is free to use. Google says Nano Banana 2, its image model in the Gemini app, is available for free with a daily quota. A Google AI plan adds Nano Banana 2.1, higher quotas, 2K downloads and the option to redo images with Nano Banana Pro.

Nano Banana is the nickname that stuck for Google's image generation and editing model inside Gemini. It's the tool behind the photo edits, product shots and character images you've probably seen all over social media. You don't need anything other than a Google account to try it, but there are a few limits on the free version that are worth knowing before you build it into your content routine.

The Nano Banana models, and which ones are free

Google's help page describes three options, and which one you get depends on the Gemini model you've selected:

ModelWhen it's usedFree?
Nano Banana 2 LiteWhen Gemini is set to Flash-Lite; built for speed and basic ideasYes
Nano Banana 2When Gemini is set to Flash or Pro; better quality, text and multiple reference imagesYes, with a daily quota
Nano Banana ProTo redo an image when you need more detailNo, needs a Google AI plan
Nano Banana 2.1Google's most advanced image modelNo, needs a Google AI plan

So the free version isn't a cut-down demo. Nano Banana 2 handles character consistency, local edits, better text in images and complex instructions. What a plan changes is how much you can make and the highest-quality options.

The free limits you'll run into

Google doesn't publish an exact free number. Its overview page says upgraded plans have higher quotas for generating content, and the help page refers to a daily quota of Nano Banana 2 images. Here's what that means in practice:

  • There's a daily cap. Once you reach it, you'll need to wait until the next day or upgrade.
  • Downloads are 1K on free. Google says you can download at 2K resolution with a Google AI plan, or at 1K without one.
  • No Pro redo. Even on a plan, Google notes that if you reach your daily quota of Nano Banana 2 images, you can't redo any more images with Nano Banana Pro.

For most social posts, 1K is fine. If you're making images for print, large banners or a website header, the resolution limit is the bit that'll push you towards a plan.

Who can use it: the age rules

This is the catch people don't expect. Google's help page sets two different age limits for personal accounts:

  • You must be 13 or over (or the applicable age in your country) to generate images.
  • You must be 18 or over to edit images, and Google says editing isn't available to users under 18.

If you're signed in with a school or work account, different rules can apply depending on the licence. And the feature is only available in the languages and countries where the Gemini app is offered.

How to use Nano Banana for free

  1. Sign in to the Gemini app with your Google account.
  2. Open the tools menu and choose Create images, or open Images from the sidebar on a computer.
  3. Pick a template or type your prompt, for example a product on a marble worktop in soft morning light.
  4. To edit, upload a photo (or several) and describe the change you want.
  5. Download the result, and keep track of how many you've made that day.

Google's own prompt advice is a simple formula: subject, action and scene, then add style, composition and aspect ratio. If you want ready-made wording, my list of copy and paste Nano Banana prompts covers the most popular photo edits.

Where else Nano Banana turns up

The Gemini app isn't the only place. Google's announcement for Nano Banana 2 lists Google Search, Flow (where it's the default image model and uses zero credits), Google Ads campaign suggestions, and AI Studio and the Gemini API for developers. If you already work in one of those, you may not need to switch tools at all.

Google also adds SynthID, its invisible watermark, plus C2PA Content Credentials so AI-made images can be identified. That's worth knowing if you're using these images for a client or in an ad.

Is the free version enough for a small business?

For testing ideas, social graphics and quick product mock-ups, yes. The free quota is generous enough to learn the tool and produce a steady stream of everyday images. Where it falls short is volume days, high-resolution downloads and the extra polish of the Pro and 2.1 models.

If you're weighing it against other generators, my comparison of what free Gemini gives you explains the rest of the free Google AI package.

Tips to make the free quota go further

  • Write the whole brief in one prompt. Include subject, setting, light, style and aspect ratio, so you need fewer retries.
  • Edit instead of regenerating. Google says Nano Banana 2 handles local edits, so ask for one change to an image you like rather than starting again.
  • Use reference images. Nano Banana 2 accepts multiple reference images, which keeps a product or character looking the same across a set.
  • Switch to Flash-Lite for rough ideas. Nano Banana 2 Lite is optimised for speed and basic ideas, so it's handy for brainstorming before you make the final version.

These habits matter more than any upgrade when you're on the free version. The fewer throwaway generations you make, the more finished images you'll get out of each day.

My verdict

Nano Banana is free, and the free version is good enough to be useful, not just a teaser. Use it to learn how to prompt it well, watch the daily cap and the 1K download size, and only upgrade when you're regularly running out or need print-quality files. And remember the age rule: under-18s can generate but can't edit.
