Facebook Favorites: How to See Your Favourite People First

Facebook Favorites is a list of up to 30 friends and Pages whose posts Facebook shows higher in your Feed, newest first. Add them under Settings and privacy, then Content preferences, then Favorites. To read only their posts, open Feeds in the left menu and choose Favorites.

If your Feed is full of suggested posts and you keep missing your sister's updates or your favourite local café, Favorites is the fix. It tells Facebook which people and Pages matter most to you, and it gives you a separate feed that only shows them.

How to add Favorites on Facebook

  1. Click your profile picture at the top right of Facebook.
  2. Click Settings & privacy, then Content preferences.
  3. Click Favorites.
  4. Click Favorite next to each friend or Page you want to add. Use the search bar to find someone specific.
  5. Click Exit when you're done.

To remove someone, follow the same steps and click Remove Favorite next to their name.

The rules worth knowing

RuleWhat Facebook says
How manyUp to 30 friends and Pages in total
GroupsYou can't add groups to Favorites
NotificationsFriends and Pages aren't told when you add or remove them
OrderTheir posts show higher in your Feed, newest first
Old See First listAnyone you set to See First was moved into Favorites automatically

The 30 limit is the one people hit. If Facebook won't let you add someone, you've probably filled your list. Remove a Favorite you no longer need and try again.

The See First point is worth checking too. If you set up See First years ago and forgot about it, those people and Pages are already sitting in your Favorites, taking up places. A quick tidy can free up room for the people you care about now.

Who to put in your Favorites

With only 30 places, it's worth being choosy. A list that works for most people looks something like this:

WhoWhy they deserve a place
Close family and best friendsThe posts you'd be upset to miss, like news, photos and announcements
Your child's school or club PageClosures, events and reminders that are easy to lose in a busy Feed
Local businesses you rely onOpening hours, offers and changes, often posted only once
A few creators or experts you learn fromTheir best posts rise above the general noise
Community or neighbourhood PagesLocal alerts and news you'd want to see on the day

Leave out anyone who posts constantly. A friend who shares ten things a day will fill your Favorites feed on their own and push everyone else down. Favorites works best for people and Pages who post less often but matter more.

Review the list every few months. People drift in and out of our lives, Pages stop posting, and the old See First choices that moved across automatically may no longer fit. Removing a name is silent, so there's no awkwardness in keeping the list current.

How to see only your Favorites

  1. Go to your Feed.
  2. Click Feeds in the left menu.
  3. Click Favorites.

Now you'll only see posts from the people and Pages on your list. To go back to everyone else, click All. On the phone app, the Feeds tab works the same way: open Feeds and pick the Favorites filter.

Favorites on the phone app

The same controls are on your phone, but menus move around between app versions. The quickest route is to open the app's menu, go into Settings, and type Favorites into the search box at the top. That takes you straight to the list, where you can add or remove friends and Pages just as you would on a computer. The Favorites feed itself lives under Feeds, so you can check it on the bus in a couple of taps.

Why add a Page to Favorites?

Pages are the hidden win here. If a local business, a school, a community group's Page or a creator you love only posts now and then, their updates are easy to miss. Adding them to Favorites pushes their posts up your Feed, and the Favorites filter gives you a quick way to check them. You need to follow a Page before you can find it in the Favorites list.

Favorites not working?

  • You've hit 30. Remove one Favorite before adding another.
  • You're trying to add a group. Groups can't be Favorites. Use the Groups filter in Feeds instead.
  • You can't find someone in the list. Use the search bar, and make sure you follow them.
  • Their posts still look buried. Favorites raises their posts in your main Feed, but suggested content and ads still appear. The Favorites filter shows only them.

Favorites, the Feeds tab and other Feed controls

Favorites is one of several ways to shape what you see. If you want everything in date order, the Feeds tab shows the most recent posts from the people, Favorites, Pages and groups you follow. If there's someone you want to see less of, snooze or unfollow them rather than unfriending. And if your Feed is packed with things you never chose, my guide to what Suggested for you means on Facebook explains where they come from, and how the Facebook algorithm decides what you see goes deeper.

My verdict

Favorites is the most underused setting on Facebook. Spend two minutes adding the handful of people and Pages you never want to miss, then bookmark the Favorites feed. It's the closest thing Facebook has to the old days of seeing your friends' posts first.
