The Bangladesh freelancer ID card is an official ID issued by the government through the ICT Division and DoICT at freelancers.gov.bd. To get one you upload your NID, a 300 by 300 pixel photo and proof of at least 50 US dollars of freelance income in the last twelve months. It's valid for three years.
For years Bangladeshi freelancers have had a recognition problem: banks, landlords and visa officers didn't always know what to make of income from foreign clients. The government's Freelancer ID is meant to fix that. The portal describes it as official proof of identity, income and professional engagement. Here's exactly what it asks for.
Who can get one
The bar is low on purpose. You need a minimum verified income of 50 US dollars within the last twelve months, for issue or for renewal. If you've done even a few small jobs for clients abroad and can prove the payment, you likely qualify.
The documents, with the exact limits
| Document | Format | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| National ID (NID), front and back | PNG, JPEG or JPG | Maximum 500 KB; both sides required, combine into one image if needed |
| Your photograph | PNG, JPEG or JPG | Maximum 500 KB, exactly 300 x 300 pixels |
| Proof of income | Maximum 2 MB, showing at least 50 US dollars in the last twelve months |
Those limits are where most applications go wrong, so prepare the files before you open the portal.
What counts as proof of income
The portal accepts Payoneer or freelancing platform statements, bank statements, or other valid income verification documents. If your income comes from more than one platform, you must merge everything into a single PDF before you upload. One file, one upload.
Pick statements that clearly show your name, the dates and the amounts. A dashboard screenshot without your name on it tends to get questioned.
How to apply, step by step
- Go to freelancers.gov.bd, the government's Freelancer ID portal.
- Scan both sides of your NID and, if needed, combine them into one image under 500 KB.
- Crop a clear photo to exactly 300 x 300 pixels and keep it under 500 KB.
- Download your income statements for the last twelve months and merge them into one PDF under 2 MB.
- Fill in the application and upload the three files.
- Keep a copy of everything you submitted for your renewal later.
Getting the files right
- Photo: most phone photos are far bigger than 300 x 300 pixels. Use any free image editor to crop and resize, then check the size before you upload.
- NID: scan in good light so the text is readable, but compress it below 500 KB.
- Income PDF: if merging pushes it over 2 MB, reduce the image quality of scanned pages rather than dropping a statement.
- Names: the name on your statements should match your NID as closely as possible.
If your application is rejected
The portal is clear that documents must be clear, valid and meet the size and format rules, so most problems are fixable. Check each file against the table above, re-export anything that's too large or the wrong type, and make sure your income PDF really shows at least 50 US dollars across the last twelve months. Then apply again. Keep your corrected files; you'll want them for renewal.
Renewal every three years
Each ID is valid for three years. Renewal uses the same rule as the first application: at least 50 US dollars of verified income in the last twelve months. So if you take a long break from freelancing, plan a few small paid jobs before your renewal date, or you may not meet the bar.
What the ID is for
The government frames it as national recognition, with official proof of identity, income and professional engagement. In practice, freelancers use that kind of proof when banks, employers or embassies ask what they do and how they earn. The portal doesn't promise specific perks with each institution, so treat it as supporting evidence rather than a pass that guarantees anything.
A quick checklist before you click submit
- NID image shows both sides, is readable and is under 500 KB.
- Photo is exactly 300 x 300 pixels, a recent clear face shot, under 500 KB.
- Income PDF is a single file under 2 MB, covers the last twelve months and adds up to at least 50 US dollars.
- Your name is visible on the income statements.
- You've saved copies of all three files somewhere safe.
Avoid paid middlemen
You'll see people on social media offering to get you a freelancer card for a fee. You don't need them. The application is on the government portal and the requirements are the ones above. Never hand your NID and statements to a stranger to apply on your behalf.

My verdict
If you earn from clients abroad, apply. The requirements are modest, the portal is official, and the ID gives you a government-issued way to show your income is real. Sort the file sizes first and it's a quick job. If you're still finding work, these online jobs in Bangladesh and my guide to finding remote clients are good places to start.
