Can Claude Make Videos? What It Can and Can't Create

Claude can't generate video footage of people or scenes. With Claude Motion, in beta on Team and Enterprise plans, it makes short animated MP4 videos from text, charts, shapes and images. For realistic footage, you need a video generation tool.

If you've seen AI tools that turn a sentence into a realistic video clip, Claude isn't one of them. Claude doesn't have a video generation model. But it can make a specific, useful kind of video: animated explainers, where text, numbers, charts and your own images move on screen. For a lot of business content, that's more useful than generated footage.

What Claude can and can't make

Can Claude make it?Answer
Realistic footage of people or placesNo
AI-generated presenters or avatarsNo
Animated text, charts and diagramsYes, with Claude Motion
Animations using your own imagesYes, with Claude Motion
Scripts, storyboards and shot lists for a videoYes, on any plan

How Claude Motion works

Claude Motion creates an animation as an artifact, the separate window Claude uses for things it builds. You describe what you want, and Claude writes code that animates the text, charts, shapes and images. It plays like a short video and exports as an MP4 file you can upload to social media, a website or a presentation.

  1. Open Claude on a plan that includes Motion.
  2. Start a new animation from the Motion template.
  3. Describe it: the message, the key numbers, the style and how long it should feel.
  4. Add any images or brand assets you want included.
  5. Watch the preview and ask for changes.
  6. Export the finished animation as an MP4.

The catch most people don't expect: it's code, not footage

Because a Motion animation is built from code, editing works differently from a video generator. You can change one word, one number or one timing, and everything else stays exactly as it was. That's a big advantage for business content: update a statistic next quarter without the whole video changing. The flip side is that there's no generated footage, no camera moves through real scenes and no AI-generated people. If you ask for those, Claude can't produce them.

Who can use it

Claude Motion is in beta and available on Team and Enterprise plans. If you're on an individual plan and don't see it, Claude can still help with the planning side of any video, and you can produce the animation or footage elsewhere.

Good uses for Claude Motion

  • Animated statistics for a social post, like survey results counting up.
  • A short explainer of how your service works, step by step.
  • Animated charts for a report or presentation.
  • Quote cards with movement for LinkedIn or Instagram.
  • Product feature highlights using your own screenshots.

How Claude helps with any video, even without Motion

  • Scripts: a tight script for a talking-head video or voiceover.
  • Hooks: several opening lines to test for short-form video.
  • Storyboards: scene-by-scene plans with on-screen text.
  • Captions and descriptions: titles, descriptions and hashtags for each platform.
  • Repurposing: turning a blog post or webinar into a series of short video ideas.

When you need a video generation tool instead

If you need realistic scenes, generated presenters or footage you couldn't film yourself, you'll need a dedicated AI video tool. My guides to animated explainer video makers and AI video enhancers cover tools that do the visual side, and Claude can still write the script you feed into them.

Getting a better animation from Claude

  • Give it the one message the video must land, not a list of everything.
  • Supply exact numbers and wording, so it doesn't have to guess.
  • Say where it'll be posted, so the shape suits the platform, such as vertical for short-form video.
  • Ask for one change at a time when refining, so you can see what each tweak does.

Claude Motion versus a video editor

Think of Motion as a quick way to make the animated pieces you'd otherwise build in a video editor or design tool, such as a moving chart or an animated headline. It isn't a replacement for an editor when you're cutting together filmed footage, adding music beds or editing interviews. Many people will use both: Motion for the animated sections and their usual editor to stitch them into a finished video with footage and sound.

Checking your animation before posting

Watch the exported MP4 on the device your audience will use, usually a phone, with the sound off. Text that's readable on a laptop can fly past too quickly on a small screen, and most people scroll social feeds silently. If a number or headline is the point of the video, make sure it stays on screen long enough to read twice. Because Motion animations are code, slowing one moment down is a quick fix rather than a re-render from scratch.

My verdict

Claude can't make realistic video footage, but with Claude Motion on Team and Enterprise plans it makes short animated videos from your text, charts and images, exported as MP4s you can edit one detail at a time. For most business explainers and data posts that's the more useful kind of video. On any plan, it's a strong partner for scripts and storyboards.
