ChatGPT is usually slow because of a very long chat, old browser data, an extension or VPN getting in the way, or busy servers. Check status.openai.com first. If nothing's reported, start a new chat, clear the site's cache and cookies, and try a private window with extensions off.
When ChatGPT crawls, it's tempting to assume OpenAI's servers are struggling. Sometimes that's true. But just as often the cause is on your side: a chat that's grown huge, stale data in your browser, or an extension quietly interfering. The good news is that each of these takes a minute to rule out, so work through them in order.
Quick fixes in order
| Check | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| status.openai.com | Shows whether OpenAI is having a slowdown or outage |
| Start a new chat | Very long conversations slow responses down |
| Refresh or restart the app | Clears a stuck session |
| Clear cache and cookies for the site | Old stored data is a common cause of sudden slowness |
| Private window, extensions off | Shows whether an extension is the problem |
| Turn off your VPN or try another network | VPNs and blockers can stall the page |
1. Check whether it's OpenAI, not you
Open status.openai.com. OpenAI posts incidents there, including ones titled 'ChatGPT response times slower than normal'. If there's a live incident, there's nothing to fix on your end: wait, or switch to a different task for a while. If everything's green, the problem is more likely local.
2. Start a new chat
This is the fix people overlook. OpenAI's own advice for lagging or freezing sessions is to start a new chat if you're in a long conversation. Every reply in a long chat has to take the whole conversation into account, and the page itself gets heavy with hundreds of messages. If you need context from the old chat, ask ChatGPT to summarise it, then paste the summary into a fresh one.
3. Clear the cache and cookies
OpenAI says that if ChatGPT was working normally and is suddenly slow, outdated cache data is the most common reason. Clear the cache and cookies for the ChatGPT site in your browser settings, then sign in again. You don't need to clear your whole browser history, just the data for that site.
4. Try a private window with extensions off
Open ChatGPT in an incognito or private window, where most extensions don't run. If it's fast there, one of your extensions is the culprit. Ad blockers, script blockers, grammar tools and page translators are the usual suspects. Switch them off one at a time in a normal window to find which.
5. Check your connection, VPN and network
VPNs, proxies and security tools can slow ChatGPT or stop answers loading partway. Turn off your VPN briefly, or try your phone's mobile data instead of office wifi. If it's quick on another network or device, the slowdown is your connection or network settings, not ChatGPT.
Why some answers take longer than others
- Long answers take longer. Asking for a long report will always be slower than a short reply. Ask for a shorter answer if speed matters.
- Reasoning models think first. Models designed to work through problems step by step pause before answering. That's by design, not a fault.
- Tools add time. Searching the web, analysing a file or creating an image all take longer than a plain text reply.
- Busy times. When demand is high, OpenAI sometimes reports slower response times on its status page.
If it's still slow
- Try a different browser, or the ChatGPT desktop or mobile app.
- Sign out and back in.
- Wait a minute, then use Stop generating and try again.
- Contact OpenAI support from the help centre, saying which browser, device and model you were using.
Getting faster answers day to day
- Ask for the format you want up front, such as 'five bullet points', so there's less to generate.
- Start a new chat for each new topic rather than keeping one endless conversation.
- Use a quicker model for simple jobs and save heavy reasoning for problems that need it.
- Keep files small: upload the pages you need, not a whole report.
Slow on the phone app?
On a phone, the usual causes are a weak signal, a power-saving mode that slows background data, or an app that's out of date. Update the ChatGPT app, switch between wifi and mobile data to see which is quicker, and close and reopen the app if a reply seems stuck. Very long chats slow the app down just as they do the website, so a fresh chat helps here too.
Is it ChatGPT or your computer?
If every website feels sluggish, not just ChatGPT, the slowdown is your device or internet connection. Close a few tabs, especially other web apps, and restart the browser. A computer that's been running for days with dozens of tabs open will make any AI chat feel slow. If ChatGPT is the only slow site, the steps above will usually find the cause.

My verdict
Start with status.openai.com. If nothing's reported, start a new chat, because long conversations are the most common hidden cause, then clear the site's cache and cookies and test a private window without extensions. Ask for shorter answers when speed matters, and expect reasoning models and web searches to take longer. For using AI tools at work more efficiently, see how to use ChatGPT for business development.
Frequently asked questions
Why is ChatGPT so slow today?
Check status.openai.com for a slowdown. If nothing's reported, start a new chat and clear the site's cache.
Do long chats make ChatGPT slower?
Yes. OpenAI suggests starting a new chat if a long conversation is lagging.
Can browser extensions slow down ChatGPT?
Yes. Test in a private window with extensions off to check.
Does a VPN slow ChatGPT down?
It can. Turn the VPN off briefly or try another network.
Why do some ChatGPT models take longer to answer?
Reasoning models work through problems before replying, which takes extra time.
Is the ChatGPT app faster than the website?
Sometimes. If the browser is slow, try the desktop or mobile app to compare.
