Partly. Scribd has a free plan called Basic, which lets you search its library of more than 300 million documents, but Scribd says most downloadable documents need an active membership. There are two free download routes: documents the uploader has made free, and uploading your own original documents.
There's also a change that confuses a lot of people. Ebooks and audiobooks now live on Everand, a separate service from the same company, and Scribd says memberships can't be moved between the two. Here's what's free on Scribd, how the trial works and how to avoid signing up for the wrong one.
What you can do on Scribd for free
- Download documents the uploader has made free. Scribd lets uploaders tick a box called Allow everyone free access to your documents, which makes them readable and downloadable with no membership.
- Upload your own documents. Scribd's Upload benefits page says that if you don't have a membership, you may still be able to download documents by uploading your own original content.
- Read documents you can't download. Scribd says if a document isn't available for download, you can still read it on Scribd, but you can't save or print it.
Scribd adds that the upload route is subject to change without notice, so treat it as a bonus rather than a promise.
Scribd vs Everand
| Scribd | Everand | |
|---|---|---|
| What it's for | Documents, plus Slideshare | Ebooks and audiobooks |
| Can memberships be swapped? | No, Scribd says they can't be transferred | No |
| Free trial length | Shown when you sign up | 30 days on the website, 7 days through the App Store or Google Play |
| Downloads | Documents, if the uploader allows it | Ebooks and audiobooks can't be downloaded as files |
That last row comes from Scribd's own troubleshooting: uploaded documents may be downloadable, but ebooks and audiobooks from Everand aren't. If you're after books, you want Everand. If you're after reports, notes and papers, you want Scribd.
How the Scribd free trial works
- Sign in on Scribd.com, click the account icon and choose Your Account.
- Under the membership section, select Start your free trial.
- Add a card or another accepted method. Scribd says nothing is taken until the trial is over.
- Scribd says it sends a reminder email before your trial ends.
- Cancel before the trial ends if you don't want to carry on. If you started in the app, cancel through the App Store or Google Play instead.
Scribd also warns that a temporary check can show on your account for a few days when you start a trial. It's a verification, not a deduction.
Signed up for the wrong one?
Scribd has a Help Center page for exactly this. If you started a trial on Scribd but wanted Everand, or the other way round, cancel it and sign up on the other site. Scribd says you won't be moved onto the plan if you cancel before the trial ends, and you need to cancel each service on its own site.
What Basic, the free plan, includes
Scribd's pause help page is the clearest description of the free plan, because pausing a membership drops you onto it. Scribd says that on Basic, search across more than 300 million documents stays open and your account keeps everything in it. These features come back only with a membership:
- AI summaries and Ask AI.
- Copying text from documents.
- Ad-free reading.
- Offline access.
Pausing instead of cancelling
If you only need Scribd now and then, pausing can suit you better than cancelling. Scribd says you can pause for 4 or 12 weeks, your uploads and saved documents stay as they are, and the membership restarts on its own. Pausing Scribd also pauses Slideshare, because one membership covers both. Scribd adds that App Store memberships can't be paused, and Google Play members pause through Google Play.
Is Scribd worth it?
If you only need the odd document, try the free routes first, especially uploading something useful of your own. If you download papers often, a membership is the simpler route. For reading on the go, my guide to the best PDF reader for Android helps you open what you download, and my look at whether Scribd is legit covers the safety side.
A quick way to decide: if you only need search and the odd free download, stay on Basic. If you rely on AI summaries, copying text or reading offline, those are membership features.
Scribd also says its services work in any country unless local providers or authorities block them, though not every Everand title is available everywhere.
My verdict: Scribd is free to browse and partly free to download, thanks to free-access uploads and the upload-to-download route. Just know which service you're signing up for, because Scribd and Everand are separate and can't be swapped.

Frequently asked questions
Does Scribd have a free plan?
Yes. Scribd calls its free plan Basic. It keeps search across more than 300 million documents open, while AI summaries, Ask AI, text copying, ad-free reading and offline access need a membership.
Can you download from Scribd for free?
Sometimes. Documents the uploader has made free are downloadable without a membership, and Scribd says uploading your own original documents may let you download others.
Is Scribd the same as Everand?
No. Ebooks and audiobooks are on Everand, documents are on Scribd, and Scribd says memberships can't be transferred between them.
How long is the Everand free trial?
Scribd's Help Center says it's 30 days if you sign up on the Everand website and 7 days through the App Store or Google Play.
Will Scribd remind me before my trial ends?
Yes. Scribd says it sends a reminder email before your trial end date.
Can I print Scribd documents?
Only if the document is available for download. Scribd says documents that can't be downloaded can be read on Scribd but not saved or printed.
Can I pause my Scribd membership?
Yes. Scribd says you can pause for 4 or 12 weeks on the website. App Store memberships can't be paused, and Google Play members pause through Google Play.
Does pausing Scribd also pause Slideshare?
Yes. Scribd says one membership covers both Scribd and Slideshare, so pausing one pauses both.
Can I read Scribd offline for free?
No. Scribd lists offline access as a membership feature that isn't part of Basic, its free plan.
