Apple Maps vs Google Maps: Which Map App Should You Use?

Apple Maps suits iPhone, Apple Watch and CarPlay users who want detailed 3D city views and a map app built around privacy. Google Maps suits people who want Gemini answers, rich local reviews and offline maps on any phone. If everything you own is Apple, Apple Maps is a smooth fit; if you switch devices or explore new places a lot, keep Google Maps.

Apple and Google have both rebuilt their map apps around very different ideas. Apple's page leads with privacy and design, while Google's leads with Gemini and local knowledge. I read both makers' pages and Google's Maps help centre for this.

Where Apple Maps stands out

Apple's tagline is the giveaway: Maps shows you around without following you around. The rest of the page backs up the design side. Driving shows real-time traffic, speed limits and speed cameras, and switches to a 3D road-level view at complex junctions, with lane guidance so you don't miss exits.

Walking uses augmented reality: raise your iPhone and Maps shows step-by-step arrows over the buildings, plus Indoor Maps for big airports and shopping centres. Cyclists get an elevation profile, and on Apple Watch, Haptic Feedback taps your wrist at each turn. Apple's detailed city views cover San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City and London, with more cities on the way.

Apple's Guides add a curated layer, with nearly 1,000 Guides from trusted names in travel and publishing that update when new places are added. You can make your own Guides and share them with friends and family, which is handy for a city break.

Where Google Maps stands out

Google has put Gemini at the centre. Ask Maps answers complicated questions and helps plan a day out, though Google notes some of its newer features are only in the US and India for now. Gemini also talks to you hands-free while you drive, walk or cycle.

The help centre shows the everyday tools: offline maps, Timeline, saved trips with live ETAs, location sharing and a Contribute tab where people add reviews, photos and fixes. Shared lists let a group react and vote on where to go next.

Google also gives you real-time choices on routes, like skipping tolls for a scenic drive or taking the fastest way, and recommendations based on the places you've checked out and saved. If you like discovering somewhere new to eat on the way, that's where Google Maps earns its place on your home screen.

The privacy and offline trade-off

Here's how I'd frame the choice. Apple builds its pitch around keeping your trips to yourself, and it ties Maps into Siri, Messages, Calendar and Apple Watch. Google builds its pitch around knowing more about places and about you, with recommendations based on what you've checked out and saved. Neither is wrong, but they suit different people.

The practical difference is offline use. Google's help centre lists offline maps clearly; Apple's Maps page doesn't mention them. If you travel somewhere with weak signal, download a Google offline map before you go.

Who each map app suits

Apple Maps suits people who live on an iPhone and Apple Watch, drive with CarPlay and value a cleaner, more private experience. Google Maps suits people on Android or a mix of devices, travellers who want offline maps, and anyone who decides where to go by reading reviews. If you own a local business, this Google Maps ranking factors cheat sheet and my local SEO checklist help customers find you on the map.

My advice on Apple Maps or Google Maps

If you're on an iPhone, give Apple Maps a fair go for a week of normal journeys, especially walking in a city with its detailed views. Keep Google Maps installed for offline maps and for checking reviews before you visit somewhere new. On Android, Google Maps is the natural choice, and you won't miss much.
