Free Wireframe Tool Options (2026): 10 Compared

A free wireframe tool lets you sketch the layout of a web page or app screen before anyone designs or builds it. Low-fidelity tools keep things rough and fast, while design platforms let you turn wireframes into clickable prototypes. Start rough on purpose, because simple sketches get more honest feedback than polished mockups.

Wireframes are where good websites start. A quick layout shows what goes where, which buttons matter and how people move from one page to the next, long before anyone argues about colours.

Here are ten free wireframe tools in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, from simple sketch tools to collaborative design platforms. Each description comes from the tool's own website, re-checked today. If you're planning a site, my list of common UI and UX mistakes helps you avoid the classic traps.

You don't need to be a designer. Wireframes are boxes, labels and arrows, and the clearer they are, the better the conversation with whoever builds the site.

Agree on the goal of each page before you draw it. A page meant to get bookings needs a different layout from one meant to answer questions, and the wireframe should make that obvious.

Free wireframe tools at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a free version or free plan, Trial only means a time-limited trial, and No means neither is stated. Free versions often come with limits, so check what's included before you rely on one.

Why rough wireframes get better feedback

Here's something worth knowing before you polish anything. Nielsen Norman Group's research on prototypes notes that low-fidelity prototypes put less pressure on users, who feel less obliged to be successful and are more likely to express negative reactions, while designers feel less wedded to a sketchy design.

In plain English, people tell you the truth about a rough sketch. Show them something that looks finished, and they'll be polite. So keep early wireframes deliberately simple.

What to check in a free wireframe tool

  • Speed: can you sketch a page in a few minutes?
  • Components: are there ready-made buttons, menus and form fields?
  • Sharing: can others comment without an account?
  • Prototyping: can you link screens to show how people move between them?
  • Free limits: how many projects or screens does the free plan allow?

How to wireframe a page in five steps

  1. Write down the one job this page has to do.
  2. List the content it needs, in order of importance.
  3. Sketch boxes for each section, top to bottom.
  4. Add labels for buttons and links, using real words.
  5. Share it and ask someone to find the main action without help.

Wireframing mistakes that waste time

  • Designing too early. Keep colours out until the structure works.
  • Lorem ipsum everywhere. Real words reveal real problems.
  • No main action. Every page needs one clear next step.
  • Skipping mobile. Sketch the phone layout too.

Once the structure works, my guide to how to create a great user experience covers the next layer.

My plain advice on free wireframe tools

Start with boxes and words, not colours and fonts. The point of a wireframe is to get the structure right before anyone falls in love with how it looks. Keep a copy of each version, too, so you can see how the thinking changed.

And test with someone who's never seen it. If they can't find the main button in a few seconds, the layout needs work. It's much quicker to move a box in a wireframe than to rebuild a finished page, so do your arguing here.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wireframe?

It's a simple layout sketch of a web page or app screen showing what goes where.

What's the difference between a wireframe and a prototype?

A wireframe shows layout. A prototype adds clicks and interactions to show how it works.

Do I need design skills to wireframe?

No. Wireframes are boxes, labels and arrows.

Should wireframes be detailed?

Early ones should be rough, so people focus on structure, not style.

Can I make wireframes for free?

Yes. Several tools offer free plans or are open source.

Can I turn a wireframe into a design?

Some tools let you build on the wireframe into full designs and prototypes.

How many screens should I wireframe?

Start with the key pages, such as home, a product or service page and contact.

Can my developer use my wireframes?

Yes. Clear wireframes save developers guessing about layout and content.

Should I use real content?

Use real headings and button labels where you can. Placeholder text hides problems.

Can I wireframe on paper?

Of course. Paper is a great place to start before moving to a tool.

What is low-fidelity?

It means rough and simple, without colours, images or polished styling.

Can AI help with wireframes?

Some tools generate wireframes from text or screenshots, which you can then edit.

How long should a wireframe take?

A single page can take minutes. If it's taking hours, you're probably designing rather than wireframing.
