Vanish mode is gone from Messenger. Meta says it's no longer supported, and the replacement is disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted chats. Open the chat, go to the chat info, choose Privacy and support, then Disappearing messages, and pick how soon seen messages should vanish.
If you're looking for the swipe-up trick that used to switch on vanish mode in Messenger, you won't find it. Meta's own help centre now says vanish mode is no longer supported. What you get instead is disappearing messages, which work a little differently and come with a timer you choose. Here's what changed, how to use the new version, and what it still can't protect you from, so you can decide whether it's right for the conversation you have in mind.
What happened to vanish mode?
Vanish mode let you swipe up in a chat so messages disappeared once you left it. Meta has retired it. Its help centre says vanish mode is no longer supported but you can still use disappearing messages, adding that they're being introduced gradually and may not be available to you yet. If you've seen old guides telling you to swipe up from the bottom of a chat, that's why it does nothing now.
How disappearing messages work instead
- They work in end-to-end encrypted chats, so you start or open one of those first.
- You set a timer, and messages disappear that long after they've been seen.
- Anyone in the chat can change or reset the timer.
- Unread messages don't hang around forever: if someone doesn't read a message within 14 days, it disappears from the chat anyway.
- Messages keep disappearing until someone switches the setting off or changes the timer.
How to turn on disappearing messages in Messenger
- Open the conversation.
- Open the chat information (the i icon or the person's name at the top).
- Choose Privacy & support.
- Tap Disappearing Messages.
- Pick when messages should disappear after they've been seen.
- Tap Done.
To turn it off, follow the same steps and switch the timer off. Messages sent while the timer was on will still disappear on schedule.
Vanish mode vs disappearing messages
| Old vanish mode | Disappearing messages | |
|---|---|---|
| How you turned it on | Swipe up in the conversation | Chat info, then Privacy and support |
| When messages go | When you left the chat | On a timer after they've been seen |
| Who can change it | Either person | Anyone in the chat |
| Still available? | No longer supported | Being rolled out gradually |
What disappearing messages can't stop
This is the part Meta is honest about, and you should be too. It says to only use disappearing messages with people you trust, because someone can still:
- Take a screenshot or screen recording before the message disappears.
- Copy and save the text.
- Photograph the screen with another phone or camera.
Messenger will notify everyone in an end-to-end encrypted chat if it detects a screenshot or screen recording, but Meta says it may not detect all of them. So treat disappearing messages as tidier, not secret, and think before you send anything you'd mind being kept.
When disappearing messages make sense
I'd use them for conversations where the details only matter for a short time: a door code for a delivery, a one-off address, a quick back-and-forth about plans that would otherwise clutter the chat for months. They're also handy for keeping a shared device tidy, so a partner or child picking up your phone doesn't scroll through every conversation you've had. For anything you might need later, such as agreements with a client, quotes you've been given or arrangements you may have to prove, leave them off. A chat that cleans itself up also deletes your record.
Choose the timer to fit the conversation. A short timer suits sensitive one-off details. A longer one keeps a running chat readable for a day or two while still clearing it out eventually.
Safety: you can still report
A disappearing chat isn't a loophole for bad behaviour. Meta says anyone in the chat can report the conversation for up to 6 hours after a message disappears. If someone sends something abusive and it vanishes, report it straight away from the chat.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Disappearing messages not showing?
- It's being rolled out gradually, so it may not have reached your account yet.
- The chat must be end-to-end encrypted. Older or business chats may not offer it.
- Update Messenger. My guide on how to update Messenger walks through it.
- Look under Privacy and support in the chat info, not in Messenger's main settings.
Other ways to keep a chat private
If you want less visibility rather than vanishing messages, you have options. You can mute or ignore a conversation, or archive it so it's out of sight without deleting anything. My guides on archiving chats on Messenger and muting conversations cover those. And if you've spotted the word "delivered" and wondered what it means, there's a full explainer on the site too.
My verdict
Vanish mode is gone, so stop looking for the swipe. Use disappearing messages in an end-to-end encrypted chat, set a timer that suits the conversation, and remember that anyone can still screenshot or photograph what you send. Use it for tidiness and privacy from casual eyes, not for anything you'd regret being saved.
