Is FL Studio Free? The Trial Catch Explained

Yes and no. FL Studio's free trial is the full version with every feature, no time limit and no audio watermarks, but Image-Line says the trial can't reopen saved project files, so once you close FL Studio a saved project stays locked until you get an Edition.

FL Studio is Image-Line's digital audio workstation, and it's a handy tool for podcast intros, video soundtracks and beats. Image-Line's approach is unusual. Instead of a cut-down free plan or a trial that runs out after a few weeks, you get the whole thing for as long as you like, with one deliberate catch. Understanding that catch is the difference between enjoying the trial and losing an evening's work.

What the FL Studio trial includes

Image-Line's download page is clear about it. The trial mode is functionally identical to the All Plugins Edition, which is the most complete version of FL Studio. That means:

  • Every instrument, every effect and every feature.
  • No time limit. Image-Line says the trial never expires.
  • No audio watermarks on what you make.
  • Full quality exports to WAV or MP3.
  • Windows and Mac, from the same official installer.

The catch: saved projects won't reopen

Here's how Image-Line puts it. In trial mode you can save and export projects, but once you close FL Studio, your project is locked until you get an Edition. The project file, which ends in .flp, is stored safely on your disk, and it reopens later once you've activated FL Studio with a licence.

In practice, that means each session in the trial has to be finished in one sitting if you want to keep working on it. Close the app, or let your computer restart for an update, and you can't pick that project up again in the trial.

The work-around is simple. Before you close FL Studio, export your track to WAV or MP3. The audio is yours at full quality, with no watermark, even though the project file itself stays locked. Then, if you do upgrade later, every saved project you made during the trial comes back to life.

Getting the trial safely

  1. Download FL Studio only from Image-Line's own download page.
  2. Run the installer. Image-Line uses one installer for the trial, the full version and updates.
  3. Open FL Studio, which starts in trial mode automatically.
  4. Make your track, then export it to WAV or MP3 before you close the app.
  5. If you decide to keep going, sign in with an Image-Line account licence and FL Studio switches to the full version without reinstalling.

Image-Line also warns against cracked and torrent copies. It says they often carry malware, won't get updates, won't connect to your Image-Line account, and that it reserves the right to restrict or block accounts that use them. The official trial already gives you every feature, so there's no reason to take that risk.

Will your computer run it?

Image-Line lists these minimums. On Windows, you need Windows 10 or 11, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space, with Intel and AMD processors supported and ARM not supported. On Mac, you need macOS 10.15.7 or newer, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space, and it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon. Image-Line recommends 8 to 16 GB of RAM and an SSD for smoother performance.

What happens if you upgrade later

Two things make FL Studio different from many music apps. First, one licence works on both Windows and Mac, so switching computers doesn't mean starting again. Second, every Edition comes with what Image-Line calls Lifetime Free Updates, meaning future updates to your Edition for as long as Image-Line keeps making FL Studio. Image-Line also says you can move up to a bigger Edition later and only cover the difference.

Who the FL Studio trial suits

The trial suits creators who want to make short pieces of audio in one sitting, such as a podcast jingle, a video background track or a quick beat, and export them straight away. It's also the best way to learn FL Studio before committing, because nothing is held back.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

It's a poor fit for long projects you'll build up over several days, because you can't reopen them without a licence.

Which Edition does the trial match?

Image-Line says there's only one installer for every Edition, and your Image-Line account licence decides which features you get, so you don't choose an Edition before downloading. The trial itself matches the All Plugins Edition, the most complete one, so you'll see every plugin while you test.

My verdict: FL Studio is free to use in full for as long as you like. Treat every trial session as a finish-and-export session, and only upgrade when you need to come back to a project.

Frequently asked questions

Is FL Studio free forever?

The FL Studio trial has no time limit. Image-Line says it never expires and includes every feature, but saved projects can't be reopened until you get an Edition.

Can you export songs from the FL Studio trial?

Yes. Image-Line says you can export to WAV or MP3 at full quality from the trial, with no audio watermarks.
