Best Customer Data Platform: 11 CDP Options Compared

The best customer data platform depends on where your data lives: a warehouse-first CDP suits teams with a data warehouse, a packaged CDP suits marketers who want one place to build audiences, and an enterprise suite suits large brands. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

A customer data platform pulls together what you know about each customer from your website, app, shop, email and support tools, then lets you use that joined-up picture to personalise marketing. Without one, every tool holds its own fragment of the story.

The eleven CDPs below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from developer-friendly tools to suites for big consumer brands. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If your data's messy to begin with, my CRM data cleanup mini-guide is a sensible first step.

Customer data platforms at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version or a free tool. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.

Packaged CDP or warehouse-first?

A packaged CDP collects and stores customer data itself, then builds audiences and sends them to your marketing tools. A warehouse-first or composable CDP works on top of a data warehouse you already have, so the data stays where your data team keeps it.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you don't have a data warehouse or a data team, a packaged CDP is usually simpler. If you do, a warehouse-first tool avoids copying everything twice.

Collect what you need, not everything

The ICO says personal data you hold must be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary, so you don't hold more than you need for your purpose. That's the data minimisation principle.

A CDP makes it very easy to switch on every source and keep every field. Decide first which fields each use case needs, such as purchase history for product recommendations, and leave the rest out. It keeps you closer to the rules and makes the data easier to trust.

Questions to ask CDP vendors

  1. Where will our customer data be stored, and who controls it?
  2. How does identity resolution work when someone uses several devices?
  3. Which of our current tools does it connect to without custom work?
  4. Can marketers build audiences without help from engineers?
  5. How are consent choices and deletion requests handled?
  6. How long does a typical setup take for a team our size?

Signs you've outgrown separate tools

  • Conflicting numbers. Each tool tells a different story.
  • Awkward emails. Offers for things people already bought.
  • Manual exports. Spreadsheets moved between systems weekly.
  • No single view. Support can't see what marketing sent.

What to fix before you buy

Agree how you identify a customer, usually an email address or account ID, and tidy duplicate records in your main systems. A CDP joins data together, but it can't decide which of two conflicting records is right.

Do you make customer data platform? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a CDP

Write down three things you want to do with joined-up customer data, such as win back lapsed buyers or stop emailing people who've already bought. Then judge each CDP on how quickly it gets you to those three, not on its full feature list.

Bring your data team in early, even if marketing owns the project on paper. Most CDP projects stall on data quality and connections, not on the marketing features. My piece on the challenges of customer data integration covers the usual stumbling blocks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a customer data platform?

It's software that collects customer data from many sources, joins it into one profile per person and makes it available to your marketing and service tools.

What's the difference between a CDP and a CRM?

A CRM mainly tracks relationships and sales activity. A CDP gathers behavioural and transactional data from many systems to build audiences and personalise marketing.

Do small businesses need a CDP?

Often not. If your email, shop and CRM already share data well, a CDP may add complexity before it adds value.

What is a composable CDP?

It's a CDP that works on top of your own data warehouse instead of storing a separate copy of customer data.

How long does it take to set up a CDP?

It varies with the number of data sources and how clean they are. Ask each vendor for a typical timeline for a team your size.

How does a CDP handle privacy?

Good CDPs record consent, respect opt-outs and help you find and delete a person's data when asked. Check this before you buy.
