How to Make a Flyer in Google Docs (That Prints Well)

To make a flyer in Google Docs, open a new document, switch it to Pages format under File, Page setup, and set narrow margins. Add a bold headline, insert your images with Insert, Image, set them to Wrap text, then add the details and a clear call to action. Download it as a PDF to print or share.

Google Docs isn't a design tool, but it'll make a perfectly decent flyer for a workshop, an open day, a sale or a notice board, and everyone you work with can open and edit it. The trick is knowing the two or three settings that stop images jumping around the page, because that's where most Google Docs flyers go wrong.

Before you start: switch to Pages format

Google Docs has two page set-ups: Pages and Pageless. Pageless is a continuous scroll with no page edges, which is great for notes and useless for a flyer. Google's help pages say that page size, margins and orientation aren't available in pageless documents, and neither are the image wrapping and positioning options. So the very first step is:

  1. Open a new document.
  2. Go to File, then Page setup.
  3. Select Pages at the top.
  4. Set narrow margins so your design can use more of the page.
  5. Click OK.

How to make a flyer in Google Docs, step by step

  1. Add a background colour if you want one, in the same Page setup window.
  2. Type a headline that sums up the event in a few words, and make it big and bold.
  3. Insert an image: click Insert, then Image, and choose Upload from computer, Drive and Photos, or Stock and web.
  4. Click the image and choose Wrap text so you can place it freely and text flows around it.
  5. Add the key details: what, when, where, and who it's for.
  6. Add a call to action: book now, visit the website, scan the code, call this number.
  7. Download it: File, Download, PDF document.

Starting from a template

If you'd rather not start from a blank page, click Template Gallery at the top right of the Google Docs home screen and pick a template with a layout close to what you want, such as a brochure or newsletter design. Google opens a copy, so the original stays untouched. Google notes that some template features are only available on work or school accounts, so the gallery may look different on a personal account.

The catch: images that jump around the page

By default, Google Docs places images in line with the text, so they move every time you type above them. That's what makes flyers look broken. Click the image and choose Wrap text or Break text, and open Image options to set the position. If those options are missing, your document is in pageless format: switch to Pages and they appear.

Image settingWhat it doesUse it for
In lineImage moves with the textSmall icons inside a sentence
Wrap textWords flow around the imagePhotos beside your details
Break textImage sits on its own lineA banner image across the page
Behind or in front of textImage layers with textA background picture with text on top

Making the flyer look more designed

  • Use two fonts at most: one bold for headings, one plain for details.
  • Stick to your brand colours for headings and shapes.
  • Use Recolor and Adjustments in Image options to make a photo lighter so text on top is readable.
  • Leave white space. A crowded flyer is skipped.
  • Put the most important detail biggest, usually the date or the offer.

A simple flyer layout that works

  1. Headline across the top.
  2. One strong image underneath.
  3. Three short lines of detail.
  4. A call to action in a coloured box or bold text.
  5. Your logo and website at the bottom.

Printing and sharing your flyer

Always download as PDF before printing. Fonts and image positions stay exactly as you designed them, which isn't always true if you print straight from the browser. For sharing online, the PDF works for email, and you can also download a PNG or JPEG of the page to post on social media.

If you also need an image-led version for social media, plan it alongside the flyer so the wording matches. My weekly marketing review template is a handy place to track where each version goes.

When to use a design tool instead

Google Docs is great for simple, text-led flyers that colleagues can edit. If you need layered graphics, lots of photos or something that looks professionally designed, a design tool will be quicker and better. The test: if you're fighting the layout for more than ten minutes, switch tools.

Reusing your flyer for the next event

Once you've got a flyer you like, don't start again next time. Use File, Make a copy, give it a new name and change the dates and details. Your layout, fonts and image positions stay exactly where they were. Keep one master copy called something like Flyer template, and only ever make copies of it, so the original never gets overwritten with old event details.

My verdict

To make a flyer in Google Docs, switch to Pages format first, set narrow margins, then build it from a bold headline, one good image set to Wrap text, a few lines of detail and a clear call to action. If image options are missing, you're in pageless format. Download as PDF to print. For tips on reusing templates across your business, see my guide to filling in a blank template step by step.
