How to Add a Signature in Canva (Draw, Type or Upload)

To add a signature in Canva, open your design, select the Tools tab in the side panel and choose Signature. Draw it with your mouse or trackpad, type your name in a handwriting font or upload a photo of your signature, then select Add signature. Canva saves it so you can reuse it in other designs.

A signature makes a certificate, thank-you card, proposal cover or email footer feel personal. Canva now has a built-in Signature tool, so you don't have to scan your handwriting or fiddle with transparent images. Here's how it works and where it's appropriate to use.

Three ways to create a signature in Canva

MethodHow it worksBest for
DrawSign with your mouse, trackpad or stylusA natural, handwritten look
TypeEnter your name and choose a handwriting-style fontA neat, consistent signature
UploadAdd a photo or scan of your real signatureMatching the signature you use on paper

How to add a signature to a presentation, print design or CV

  1. Open your design.
  2. Select the Tools tab in the panel on the left.
  3. Choose Signature.
  4. Pick Draw, Type or Upload, or select a signature you saved earlier.
  5. Select Add signature.
  6. Move and resize it like any other element.

You can also get there through Elements: open Elements, search for Signature and select Create.

How to add a signature in Canva Docs and email designs

  1. Open the doc or email design.
  2. Select the plus button on the design, or type a forward slash.
  3. Search for Signature and choose it from Quick Actions.
  4. Create or pick a saved signature, then select Add signature.

Tips for a signature that looks real

  • Use a stylus or tablet if you're drawing. A mouse signature rarely looks natural.
  • Sign bigger than you need, then shrink it. Small strokes look shaky.
  • Upload on a white background if you're using a photo, with good lighting and no shadows.
  • Use dark blue or black so it reads as ink.
  • Keep a typed version for quick, consistent use on things like social graphics.

The catch: a Canva signature isn't automatically a legal signature

This is the part to take seriously. Canva itself reminds people to make sure a signature meets any legal requirements in their region before using it on binding documents. Adding a picture of your signature to a contract in Canva isn't the same as signing it through a dedicated e-signature service, which records who signed, when, and from where.

So use Canva signatures for presentation and personal touches: certificates, thank-you notes, welcome letters, proposal covers and email footers. For contracts, agreements and anything legally binding, use a dedicated e-signature tool and follow your local rules.

Protecting your signature online

A clear image of your signature on a public post is easy for someone to copy. A few precautions help:

  • Use a typed or stylised version on public social media graphics, not your exact legal signature.
  • Keep your real uploaded signature for private documents.
  • When you share signed PDFs, consider downloading as PDF Standard, which Canva says is the only PDF type with password protection.

Drawn, typed or uploaded: which looks best?

I'd go with upload if you already have a signature you like on paper. Sign a few times with a dark pen on plain white paper, photograph the best one in daylight and upload it. It'll look the most like you. A typed signature in a handwriting font is the tidiest choice for things like certificates you send out in bulk, because it looks identical every time. Drawing directly in Canva works fine with a stylus on a tablet, but with a mouse or trackpad it tends to look wobbly, so I'd only use it in a pinch.

Whichever you pick, save it in Canva so you aren't recreating it for every design. Consistency is part of what makes a signature look authentic to the people receiving it.

Downloading a design with a signature

For printing, download as PDF Print. For digital use, PNG or PDF Standard both work. If you want just the signature on its own with a see-through background to use elsewhere, you'll need a transparent PNG, which Canva offers on Pro, Teams, Education and Nonprofits plans.

Where a signature adds a nice touch

  • Certificates for course or workshop attendees.
  • Thank-you cards that go out with orders.
  • Welcome letters in client onboarding packs.
  • Personal notes at the end of a newsletter or lead magnet. My guide to writing Instagram quotes that get shared pairs well with a signed quote graphic.

My verdict

Canva's Signature tool is the easiest way to add a handwritten touch: open Tools, choose Signature, then draw, type or upload it and add it to your design. It's perfect for certificates, cards and covers, but it's not a substitute for a legal e-signature on contracts, as Canva itself points out. Keep your exact legal signature off public graphics.
