How to Convert Canva to PowerPoint (PPTX) the Right Way

To convert Canva to PowerPoint, open your presentation, select Share, then Download, and choose PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint) as the file type. Pick the slides you want and select Download. Open the file in PowerPoint and check fonts, because animations and embedded videos don't carry across.

Plenty of clients, employers and conference organisers still want a PowerPoint file. The good news is you can design in Canva, where it's faster and nicer, and hand over a PPTX at the end. It's a two-minute job, but the result isn't always identical, so here's what to check before you send it.

How to download Canva as PowerPoint

  1. Open your presentation in Canva.
  2. Select Share in the top right.
  3. Select Download.
  4. Open the file type list and choose PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint).
  5. Choose All pages, This Page or Custom to pick slides.
  6. Select Download and open the file in PowerPoint.

Why the PowerPoint option might be missing

Canva only offers PPTX for presentations. If your design began as a social media post, a document, a whiteboard or a poster, PowerPoint won't appear in the list. Canva Docs can download as Word (DOCX) instead. To get a PowerPoint from another design type, create a new Presentation design and copy your pages or elements into it.

What survives the trip to PowerPoint

The catch: fonts and movement don't always make it

Canva is clear that a PPTX download may look different once it's opened in PowerPoint, and that you might need to download and install the fonts you used in Canva onto your computer. If PowerPoint doesn't have your font, it swaps in another one, and suddenly headings wrap onto two lines or spill off the slide.

Animations and embedded videos aren't supported in the PowerPoint export at all, according to Canva. If your deck relies on slide animations or a video playing on a slide, you'll need to rebuild those in PowerPoint or present from Canva instead.

How to fix a PowerPoint that looks wrong

  1. Check which fonts you used in Canva and install the same ones on the computer opening the file.
  2. If you can't install them, pick a standard font in PowerPoint and replace it across the deck in one go.
  3. Go through each slide at full screen and nudge anything that's moved.
  4. Re-add any videos by inserting the video file directly in PowerPoint.
  5. Add simple PowerPoint transitions if the deck needs movement.

Watch out for premium elements

If you're on Canva Free and your presentation uses premium elements, Canva may ask you to buy a licence for them or download a watermarked draft before you can export. Swap premium photos and graphics for free ones before you download if you want a clean file with no watermarks.

Going the other way: PowerPoint into Canva

Got an old PowerPoint deck you want to redesign? Canva can import it. Drag the file onto your Canva homepage, or use File, then Upload a file in the editor. Canva supports both .pptx and .ppt files, up to 300 slides. There are limits: charts, SmartArt, 3D objects and WordArt aren't supported and get left out, and Canva says this import is still in beta and only works on canva.com in a desktop browser.

Should you convert at all?

Before converting, ask whether the other person needs to edit the deck or just see it. If they only need to see it, share a Canva link or present from Canva, and everything stays exactly as designed. If they need to edit it in Office, or the event requires a PowerPoint upload, convert and then check every slide. For live online sessions, the platform matters too, and my guide to video conferencing software compares the main options.

Sending the file to a client or event

Before you email the PowerPoint, open it yourself on the same kind of computer the other person uses, ideally with the fonts you know they'll have. Check the first slide, a busy middle slide and the last slide at full screen. Then send a PDF alongside it. The PDF is your insurance: if fonts go wrong on their machine or an event's presentation laptop, they still have a version that looks exactly as you designed it. For conference talks, I'd also bring both files on a USB stick, because event Wi-Fi and cloud links have a habit of failing at the worst moment.

Tips for a cleaner conversion

  • Use common fonts if you know the deck will end up in PowerPoint.
  • Group elements that belong together so they don't drift apart.
  • Avoid complex layered effects; flatten them into a single image first.
  • Keep a PDF version as a backup that will always look right.

My verdict

Share, Download, PPTX: that's all it takes to turn a Canva presentation into PowerPoint. Expect to fix fonts and accept that animations and videos won't come with it. If the people receiving it only need to view it, skip the conversion and share or present from Canva. Frequently asked questions

Can I download a Canva presentation as PowerPoint?

Yes. Select Share, then Download, and choose PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint).

Why can't I see the PPTX option in Canva?

It's only available for presentation designs. Copy your content into a Presentation design to export it.

Do Canva animations work in PowerPoint?

No. Canva says animations and embedded videos aren't supported in PowerPoint downloads.

Why do my fonts look different in PowerPoint?

PowerPoint replaces fonts it doesn't have. Install the Canva fonts you used, or switch to a standard font.

Should I send a PDF as well as the PowerPoint?

Yes. A PDF always looks exactly as designed, so it's a safe backup if fonts change on another computer.

Can I import PowerPoint into Canva?

Yes. Upload a .pptx or .ppt file of up to 300 slides. Charts, SmartArt, 3D objects and WordArt aren't supported.
