To undo in Canva, click the Undo arrow at the top of the editor, next to Resize, or press Ctrl + Z on Windows or Cmd + Z on a Mac. To redo, click Redo or press Ctrl + Y or Cmd + Y. To go back further than undo allows, Canva Pro users can restore an older version from File, then Version history.
Everyone's done it: deleted the wrong element, dragged a photo into the wrong frame or changed every font in a design by accident. In Canva, the fix is usually one click away. Here's how undo and redo work, and the more powerful option for when you need to go back a lot further.
How to undo in Canva
| Action | Button | Mac | Windows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Undo | Curved arrow next to Resize | Cmd + Z | Ctrl + Z |
| Redo | Arrow beside Undo | Cmd + Y, or Shift + Cmd + Z | Ctrl + Y |
- Look at the menu bar at the top of the editor.
- Find the curved Undo arrow, next to Resize.
- Click it once for each step you want to reverse.
- If you go too far, click Redo to bring the change back.
The keyboard shortcut is quicker once you're used to it. Hold Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) and tap Z as many times as you need.
Undo on the Canva mobile app
On a phone or tablet, the undo and redo arrows sit in the toolbar of the editor. Tap undo to step back one change at a time. If you can't see them, tap outside any selected element first so the main toolbar shows.
When undo isn't enough: version history
Undo is great for the last few changes. But what if you realise tomorrow that yesterday's version was better, or a colleague overwrote your slides last week? That's what version history is for.
- Open the design.
- Go to File, then Version history.
- Click through the saved versions to compare them.
- Select Restore to go back to that version, or Make a copy to keep both.
Canva says you can restore up to 1,000 previous versions with no time limit on how long they're kept, and you'll see avatars showing who made each change, which is handy for teams.
The catch: version history isn't on the free plan
This is the bit that surprises people at exactly the wrong moment. Canva's help centre says free users don't have access to Version History. The full feature is on Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits. You also need to own the design or have edit access, and it isn't available if you're designing on a partner website through the Canva Button.
So if you're on the free plan, your safety net is undo plus good habits. Before making big changes, use File, then Make a copy, or duplicate the page you're about to rework. Then you can always go back to the copy.
Why undo sometimes doesn't work
- You're typing in a text box. Undo may only reverse your typing. Click outside the text first to undo design changes.
- You closed and reopened the design. Undo works on recent changes while you're editing. For older changes, use version history.
- Someone else made the change. On shared designs, check version history to see who changed what.
- A browser extension grabbed the shortcut. Try the Undo button instead of the keyboard.
Undoing specific things
| You want to undo | Quickest fix |
|---|---|
| A deleted element | Ctrl or Cmd + Z straight away |
| A drawing stroke | Undo, or use the Eraser in Draw |
| A background removal | Undo, or reselect the photo and turn the effect off |
| A whole page you deleted | Undo immediately, or restore an older version |
| Changes made days ago | File, then Version history (Pro and other premium plans) |
Undo vs delete vs restore: which do you need?
It helps to know which tool fits which mistake. Undo is for the last few things you did while the design is open: a moved photo, a wrong colour, a deleted text box. Restoring a version is for bigger regrets, such as a whole layout that's gone wrong or changes someone else made while you were away. And deleting is permanent once you've closed the design and moved on, so if you remove a page you might want later, duplicate it and hide it at the end of the design instead. Thinking about it this way stops the panic of hammering Ctrl + Z twenty times and hoping for the best.

Habits that save you from needing undo
- Lock elements you don't want to move, such as backgrounds and logos.
- Duplicate a page before experimenting on it.
- Make a copy of the whole design before a big rebrand or resize.
- Name important designs clearly so you can find the right version later.
These small habits matter more than any shortcut, especially if you share designs with a team or a virtual assistant. My guide to brand content for social media covers how to keep shared designs consistent.
My verdict
Ctrl or Cmd + Z is the fastest way to undo in Canva, with the Undo arrow next to Resize as a backup and Ctrl or Cmd + Y to redo. For anything older than your current session, version history is the real safety net, but it's only on Canva Pro and the other premium plans. On the free plan, make a copy before big changes.
