How to Use Frames in Canva (Photos, Shapes and Video)

To use frames in Canva, open Elements in the side panel, choose Frames and click the shape you want to add it to your page. Then drag a photo or video onto the frame until it snaps inside. Double-click the photo to reposition or resize it within the frame, and select Done.

Frames are one of those Canva features that make a design look like a designer touched it. Instead of a plain rectangle photo, you get a circle headshot, a photo inside a laptop screen or a picture cut into the shape of a letter. Once you know how they work, you'll use them on almost every post.

What a frame does in Canva

A frame is a placeholder in a shape. Canva describes frames as a way to crop images or videos into different shapes. Drop a photo into a circle frame and Canva trims it into a circle for you, without you having to crop anything by hand. Swap the photo later and the shape stays put, which is why frames are brilliant for templates you reuse every week.

How to add a frame and put a photo in it

  1. Open your design and select Elements in the side panel.
  2. Under Browse categories, choose Frames, or search for a shape such as circle, heart or phone.
  3. Click a frame to add it to your page, then resize it with the corner handles.
  4. Go to Uploads, Photos or Videos.
  5. Drag your image over the frame until it snaps into place.

How to move or resize the photo inside a frame

  1. Double-click the photo inside the frame.
  2. Drag the white circle handles at the corners to make the photo bigger or smaller.
  3. Drag the photo itself to change which part shows.
  4. Select Done.

This is how you get a face centred in a circle frame, or the product rather than the table showing in a square one.

How to swap the photo in a frame

You don't need to delete and start again. Right-click the frame and choose Replace image, or select the photo and use Replace in the toolbar, then pick the new image. The frame keeps its size, position and shape.

Turn any simple shape into a frame

If you can't find the frame you want, make one. Canva lets you convert some shapes into frames:

  1. Add the shape and the photo or video to your page.
  2. Select both. Hold Shift and click each one, or drag across them.
  3. Right-click and choose Change to frame.
  4. To undo it, right-click and choose Detach image.

The catch: not every shape can become a frame

This is where people get stuck, wondering why the option isn't showing. Canva says Change to frame only appears for eligible shapes that have a single visible outline, such as basic shapes, AI-generated shapes and drawn shapes. It won't work on graphics, stickers, photos, lines, tables, charts, multi-part shapes, sticky notes, patterned shapes or anything that's already a frame. If the option is missing, swap your decorative graphic for a plain shape and try again.

The other rule to remember: only images and videos go into frames. You can't drop text or a chart into one. If you want text inside a shape, use a shape with text instead.

Clever ways to use frames

  • Circle headshots for team pages, speaker graphics and testimonial posts.
  • Device mockups: drop a screenshot into a laptop or phone frame to show off your website or app. My guide to website design mockup software goes further.
  • Letter frames to spell a word with photos inside each letter.
  • Video frames to play a clip inside a shape on a reel or presentation.
  • Reusable templates where you swap the photo each week and keep the layout.

Frames or grids?

Grids work in a similar way but split a space into several photo slots, which is handy for collages. Frames are better when you want one photo in a particular shape. You can use both in the same design, for example a grid for a product range with a circle frame for your face in the corner.

Using video in frames

They aren't just for photos. Canva lets you drop videos into frames too, which is a lovely trick for reels and presentations. Put a short clip of you talking inside a circle frame in the corner of a slide, or play a product demo inside a phone frame. It works exactly the same way: drag the video from Uploads or Videos over the frame, then double-click it to adjust what's showing. If the video's taller than the frame, drag it so the important bit stays in view, because whatever's outside the shape won't be seen.

Tips for clean results

  • Use high-resolution photos, because frames often enlarge the part of the image you show.
  • Keep the same frame shape across a series of posts so your feed looks consistent.
  • Add a subtle border in a brand colour to make frames pop on busy backgrounds.
  • Group the frame with its caption so they move together.

My verdict

Frames are the quickest way to make photos look designed rather than dumped onto a page. Add one from Elements, drag a photo in, double-click to position it, and use Replace image when you update it. If the Change to frame option won't appear, the shape isn't eligible, so switch to a plain shape. For ready-made graphics that already use frames well, my pack of done-for-you social media images is a good shortcut.
