Asana suits teams that want detailed task tracking, with timelines, Gantt views, automations and AI agents, and its free Personal plan covers up to 2 people. Basecamp suits small teams and agencies that want everything for a project in one place, with packages that count active projects rather than people. Count your people and your live projects before you choose.
Both tools keep projects moving, but they're built on very different ideas of what a project is. I read Basecamp's plans page and Asana's plans page, including the small print under each plan, and the facts below come from those two pages.

Basecamp: one place per project
Basecamp Personal is free forever: one project, up to 3 people and 1 GB of storage, which Basecamp calls limited but plenty for personal use. Business packages then step up by active projects: Freelancer has 3, Pro has 8, Pro Plus has 12 and Pro Unlimited has no limit, with storage rising from 10 GB to 1 TB.
Each package also caps people, from 5 on Freelancer to unlimited on Pro Unlimited. Pro adds several tools in one project, such as two message boards, plus project templates, and Pro Plus adds time tracking. Every plan, including the free one, lists ChatGPT and Claude connectors with full MCP support and the option to bring your own AI agents.
Asana: detailed tracking that grows
Asana's Personal plan is free forever for one or two people managing personal projects. It includes unlimited tasks and projects, list, board and calendar views, unlimited storage with a 100MB file limit, status updates and more than 100 free integrations.
Starter removes the seat limit and adds timeline and Gantt views, reporting dashboards, unlimited automations, forms, custom fields and unlimited free guests, along with AI Teammates, Asana Dash and AI Studio. Advanced adds portfolios, goals, resource management, approvals and proofing, and links your projects to Salesforce, Tableau and Power BI for reporting.
Why archiving matters on Basecamp
Here's the detail on Basecamp's page that changes how you plan. Its packages count active projects only, and archived or deleted projects don't count against your total. So a Freelancer account could hold dozens of finished projects, as long as no more than 3 are live at once.
Asana works the other way round: projects and tasks are unlimited, even on the free plan, and the number of people is what moves you up. That makes Basecamp friendlier for agencies with a big client list and a small team, and Asana friendlier for teams with many projects running together.
Which team each tool suits
Basecamp suits agencies, freelancers and small firms who want client work, messages, files and to-dos for each project in one tidy space. Asana suits marketing, operations and product teams who need timelines, dependencies, dashboards and automations. For tips on the second, see this Asana marketing strategy and read why project management is hard for small teams.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My advice on choosing between them
Write down how many people need access and how many projects run at the same time. If it's a handful of people on lots of tasks, Asana's free Personal plan is a quick test for two of you. If it's a few live client projects with clients and colleagues dipping in, set up Basecamp Personal for one project and see whether its message board and to-dos replace your email threads.
