Yes, Adobe Express is free. The free plan includes templates, Adobe Stock photos and videos, background removal, video editing, a content scheduler and 5GB of cloud storage. Premium adds brand kits, one-click resizing, 4K export and much bigger template and font libraries.
Adobe Express is Adobe's quick design tool for social posts, flyers, short videos and simple graphics. If you've used Canva, it'll feel familiar. The free plan is more generous than most people expect, so it's worth knowing exactly where the line is before you upgrade.

The Adobe Express limit that matters most for business
For a business owner, the big gap isn't templates. It's brand kits and resizing. On the free plan, you can't save your brand colours, fonts and logos in a Brand Kit, and you can't resize one design into several formats in the same file. If you post the same graphic to Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook, that resize feature is where Premium starts to justify itself.
The other one to watch is storage. 5GB fills up quickly if you edit video, and version history only goes back 10 days on free, so you can't roll a design back much further than that.
What you can do free that you might not expect
Background removal is free, and so is exporting a PNG with a transparent background, which covers a lot of everyday logo and product image jobs. You can also caption videos, translate text into more than 45 languages, add safe zone guides for each social format and use real-time co-editing with someone else. Adobe also says commercial use is covered for its Firefly-powered features on every plan.
AI features on the free plan
Adobe Express includes Firefly-powered AI on the free plan, but in smaller doses. The comparison table shows free daily generations for creating images, text effects and templates and for inserting or removing objects. Premium moves to a monthly allowance of generative credits instead. Access to partner AI models from other companies and Firefly Boards are listed as Premium features.
For most social posts, the free daily allowance is plenty. If you're generating images all day, that's where you'll notice it.
Working with other people on the free plan
Real-time co-editing and commenting are on the free plan, and so is sharing templates across a team. The difference is ownership: on free you can use branded templates someone else has made, while Premium lets you create them. Libraries, which store your Adobe Express and Creative Cloud assets in one place, are a Premium feature.
How to start with Adobe Express for free
- Go to the Adobe Express site and sign up with your Adobe ID, Google or Apple account.
- Pick a template for the format you need, such as an Instagram post or a flyer.
- Swap in your own text, photos and colours.
- Use the quick actions to remove a background or trim a video.
- Download it, or connect one social account and schedule it from the content scheduler.
Adobe Express or Canva?
They overlap a lot. If you're already comfortable in Canva, my Canva review explains where it shines, and this guide on how to get Canva Pro for free covers the legitimate routes if you qualify. Adobe Express makes most sense if you already use other Adobe apps, because it connects with Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom.
Who the free plan suits
The free plan suits solo business owners who make a few social posts a week, the odd flyer and short videos. It's also a good choice if you want to try Adobe's tools without committing to anything bigger.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
It suits you less if you manage several brands, post the same design across lots of platforms or edit long videos. That's when brand kits, multi-format resizing and the longer video limit become worth having.
My verdict: Adobe Express is free and the free plan is good enough for most everyday social graphics. Start there, and only move to Premium when you're tired of rebuilding the same design for every platform.
