How to Stabilize Video in Premiere Pro (Warp Stabilizer Fixes)

To stabilize video in Premiere Pro, open the Effects panel, search for Warp Stabilizer and drag it onto the shaky clip. Premiere analyses the clip automatically, then smooths the motion. Start with Smoothness between 50% and 75%, and switch the Method to Position, Scale, Rotation if the result looks wobbly or warped.

Handheld footage from a phone or a walk-and-talk is often just a bit too shaky to use. Premiere Pro's Warp Stabilizer smooths it out without any extra software, and the default settings fix most clips. When it goes wrong, the picture can look like jelly or get cropped too tightly, and both have simple fixes. Here's how to apply it and tune it.

Apply Warp Stabilizer

  1. In the timeline, select the shaky clip. Trim it first, so Premiere only analyses the part you're using.
  2. Open the Effects panel and search for Warp Stabilizer.
  3. Drag it onto the clip, or double-click it with the clip selected.
  4. Wait for the analysis. Adobe says a blue bar in the Program Monitor shows it's analysing, then an orange bar while it stabilises.
  5. Play the clip back and judge the result.

Analysis runs in the background, so you can keep editing other clips while it works. Long clips take a while, which is another reason to trim first.

The settings that make the difference

SettingWhat it doesTry

Result: No MotionTries to remove all camera movementShots meant to look like a tripod
SmoothnessHow much smoothing is appliedAdobe suggests 50% to 75%
MethodHow Premiere moves the picturePosition, Scale, Rotation if you see warping
Crop Less Smooth MoreTrades cropping against smoothingLower it if the picture zooms in too far

Adobe notes that Smoothness only works with Smooth Motion. With No Motion, Premiere ignores it, and the crop-versus-smooth slider is switched off too.

Fix the jelly or warped look

The default Method, Subspace Warp, bends different parts of the frame separately. Adobe warns this can introduce unwanted warping, which shows up as wobbly walls or a rippling face. Change the Method to Position, Scale, Rotation and click Analyze again. It's a simpler correction that looks more natural on talking heads and buildings.

Fix a picture that's cropped too tightly

Stabilising works by zooming in slightly and moving the frame to cancel the shake, so heavy shake means a heavy crop. If your subject's head is cut off or the image looks soft, lower Smoothness or move the Crop Less Smooth More slider towards Crop Less. Accept a little remaining movement; it often looks more natural than a perfectly locked shot anyway.

Clips Warp Stabilizer struggles with

  • Very fast movement or motion blur, where there's nothing sharp to track.
  • Shots with lots of moving people filling the frame.
  • Footage that's already been sped up or slowed down; stabilise before changing speed, or nest the clip first.
  • Clips with a different size from the sequence; nest them first if Premiere asks.

Smooth Motion or No Motion?

Pick based on what the shot is meant to look like. If the camera was supposed to move, such as following someone down a corridor or panning across a room, keep Smooth Motion, which leaves the movement in but takes out the jitter. If the shot was meant to be still, like a person talking to a handheld phone, No Motion makes it look as if it was on a tripod. No Motion usually needs more cropping, so check the edges of the frame afterwards and switch back if your subject gets too close to the edge.

Stabilise before adding other effects

Add Warp Stabilizer first, before colour correction, titles or speed changes. Effects stacked on top of it are fine, but changing the clip underneath forces a fresh analysis, and some changes, such as speed ramps, stop it working at all. If you've already adjusted a clip, right-click it and choose Nest, then add Warp Stabilizer to the nested clip. It's a quick workaround that saves redoing your edit.

Speed up the workflow

  • Trim before stabilising to cut analysis time.
  • Turn the effect off with the fx toggle in Effect Controls while you edit, and back on for export.
  • Copy a working Warp Stabilizer and paste it onto similar clips, then let each re-analyse.
  • Render the stabilised clips before playback if previews stutter.

Prevent shake next time

Stabilising in Premiere is a fix, not a substitute for steady footage. Shoot with the phone's own stabilisation switched on, hold it with both hands close to your body, and walk slowly with bent knees. Even a basic gimbal or a small tripod makes a bigger difference than any setting. Less shake to start with means less cropping in the edit.

My verdict

Trim the clip, drop on Warp Stabilizer and let it analyse. If the result looks rubbery, switch Method to Position, Scale, Rotation; if it's cropped too much, lower Smoothness. Most handheld business footage looks fine with Smoothness around 50% and Smooth Motion selected.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stabilize video in Premiere Pro?

Drag the Warp Stabilizer effect onto the clip and let Premiere analyse it.

What Smoothness should I use in Warp Stabilizer?

Adobe suggests between 50% and 75% as a starting point.

Why does my stabilized video look warped?

Subspace Warp can cause wobble. Switch Method to Position, Scale, Rotation.

Why is my stabilized video zoomed in?

Stabilising crops the frame. Lower Smoothness or use Crop Less.

What does No Motion do in Warp Stabilizer?

It tries to remove all camera movement, like a tripod shot.

Can I keep editing while Warp Stabilizer analyses?

Yes. Analysis runs in the background.
