The best EHS software depends on your organisation: a frontline app suits teams that mostly need inspections and incident reports, a mid-sized platform suits companies managing safety, quality and risk together, and an enterprise suite suits large multi-site operations. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Health and safety paperwork has a habit of sitting in five places: a binder, a shared drive, three spreadsheets and someone's inbox. EHS software brings incidents, inspections, risk assessments and training records into one system you can trust when it matters.
The eleven EHS tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from mobile-first apps to suites used by global manufacturers. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. For the bigger picture, my article on why health and safety matters at work is a good starting point.
EHS software at a glance
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version, a free app or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.

Frontline app, mid-sized platform or enterprise suite?
Frontline apps focus on inspections, checklists and quick incident reports from a phone, and they'll often work offline. Mid-sized platforms add risk assessments, permits, contractor control and quality modules. Enterprise suites connect safety, environment, sustainability and operational risk across many sites and countries.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The best fit depends on who reports and who reviews, and that isn't always obvious. If most of your incidents come from the shop floor, the mobile experience matters more than the dashboards.
The incident deadline test
OSHA says all employers must notify it within 8 hours of a work-related death, or within 24 hours of a work-related in-patient hospitalization, amputation or loss of an eye.
Deadlines like that are why alerts matter. In a demo, log a serious incident and see who gets told, how fast and what the system asks for next. In the UK, check the same flow against your RIDDOR reporting duties.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Can frontline staff report an incident in under a minute on a phone?
- Does it work offline on sites with poor signal?
- How are serious incidents escalated, and to whom?
- Which modules come as standard: inspections, permits, training or chemicals?
- Can contractors use it without a full account?
- How are reports built for the board and for regulators?
Features that change safety culture
- Quick reporting. Near misses get logged, not forgotten.
- Mobile inspections. Checklists done on the spot, with photos.
- Action tracking. Every finding has an owner and a date.
- Clear dashboards. Leaders see trends, not just totals.
Signs your safety records are scattered
Incident forms on paper, inspection results in email and nobody sure if actions were closed are the usual signs. If an audit would take days to prepare, it's time for EHS software.
Do you make health and safety software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing EHS software
Start with reporting. If it's hard for a worker to report a near miss, you'll never see the problems that lead to serious incidents. Test every tool with the people who'll use it on the floor, not just the safety team.
Then plan the rollout one module at a time: incidents first, then inspections, then the rest. Don't switch everything on in week one. If your team holds OSHA cards, my guide to whether OSHA 10 cards expire answers a question that comes up a lot.
Frequently asked questions
What is EHS software?
EHS software manages environment, health and safety work, such as incident reports, inspections, risk assessments, permits, training and compliance records.
Who uses EHS software?
Safety managers, site leads, frontline workers and contractors use it, along with sustainability and quality teams in larger organisations.
Is there free EHS software?
None of the EHS products on this list named a free plan on the pages I read. Several offer demos or a trial instead.
Does EHS software help with OSHA reporting?
It can track incidents and deadlines, which helps with OSHA's rules on notifying it of serious injuries within set time limits.
Can EHS software work offline?
Some can. Notify's site says its apps work with no internet required, which suits remote sites.
What's the difference between EHS and QHSE software?
QHSE adds quality management to environment, health and safety, so one system covers audits, non-conformances and safety together.
