The best PLM software depends on the size and rules of your product world: a lightweight BOM tool suits hardware start-ups, a cloud PLM with quality built in suits regulated device makers, and an enterprise suite suits large manufacturers. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Every product company eventually loses a revision. Someone builds from the old drawing, a supplier gets the wrong bill of materials, and suddenly everyone wants to know where the master file lives. Product lifecycle management is the answer to that question.
The eleven PLM options below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from free and lightweight tools to the suites used by aerospace and automotive giants. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If you're preparing for market, my notes on launching a new product sit nicely alongside this.
PLM software at a glance
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version, a free app or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.

Eleven PLM options to consider
Aras Innovator
Best for: Aerospace, automotive and industrial companies that want an open, adaptable PLM platform and a digital thread linking product data.
Arena
Best for: Manufacturers that want cloud product lifecycle and quality management in one system, with enterprise integrations from parent company PTC.
Autodesk Fusion Manage
Best for: Mid-sized manufacturers that want cloud PLM with a library of ready-to-implement business processes they can switch on quickly.
Centric PLM
Best for: Consumer product brands that want PLM alongside planning, market intelligence and visual merchandising boards from one vendor.
ENOVIA
Best for: Large engineering organisations that want structured cross-discipline collaboration on product data from a long-established PLM brand.
Odoo PLM
Best for: Small manufacturers already on Odoo that want engineering changes, versions and approvals in the same system, with a free one-app plan.
OpenBOM
Best for: Hardware start-ups that want collaborative bill of materials management, change tracking and CAD integrations without a heavy PLM.
PDXpert
Best for: Smaller product companies that want simple, flexible product lifecycle management they can download and evaluate in full first.
Propel
Best for: Product innovators in medical devices, high tech and consumer goods who want unified product data on an AI-native platform.
Siemens Teamcenter
Best for: Large manufacturers that want digital twins connecting designs, systems, software and simulation in an established PLM system.
Windchill
Best for: Enterprises in regulated industries that want core PDM and advanced PLM applications with standard functionality out of the box.
BOM tool, cloud PLM or enterprise suite?
Lightweight tools focus on the bill of materials, revisions and change tracking, often linked straight to CAD. Cloud PLM adds change orders, supplier collaboration and frequently quality management. Enterprise suites connect engineering, manufacturing and service across many sites, with digital twins and deep configuration.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A hardware start-up with two engineers and a global manufacturer both need PLM, but if you pick the wrong tier, you'll either drown in setup or outgrow the tool within a year.
Medical device makers: check the quality link
21 CFR 820.10 says a medical device maker must document a quality management system that complies with ISO 13485, and must document a system to assign unique device identification.
That's why device teams care so much about how PLM connects design changes to quality records. In a demo, raise a change and follow it all the way to the updated documents.
Questions for every PLM demo
- Which CAD tools does it connect to, and how deep is the link?
- How are engineering change orders raised, approved and released?
- Can suppliers see the parts and drawings they need, and nothing else?
- How does it handle multi-level BOMs and variants?
- Is quality management built in or a separate product?
- How do we export our full product history if we leave?
Features that prevent rework
- Revision control. Nobody builds from an old drawing.
- Change orders. Every change has an owner and a reason.
- Supplier access. The right files reach the right partners.
- BOM comparison. You see exactly what changed between versions.
Signs your file server isn't coping
Duplicate part numbers, drawings saved as final-final-v3 and suppliers asking which version is current are the usual warnings. Once those happen every week, a PLM tool will save time and rework.
Do you make PLM software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing PLM software
Buy for the product complexity you'll have in two years, not the one you had when you started. Moving product history between PLM systems is painful, so a little headroom saves a lot of pain later.
Then test it with real data: one product, its full BOM, two revisions and a change order. The tool that makes that feel calm is the right one. If your products are moving toward custom builds, my article on the shift to mass customisation is useful background.
Frequently asked questions
What is PLM software?
Product lifecycle management software keeps product data, such as parts, BOMs, drawings, revisions and changes, in one controlled place from concept to end of life.
What's the difference between PDM and PLM?
PDM manages design files and revisions, usually for engineers. PLM goes wider, covering changes, suppliers, quality and the whole lifecycle.
Is there free PLM software?
Odoo's site describes a free plan with unlimited users for one app, which covers Odoo PLM. Check the table for each tool's status.
Do start-ups need PLM?
Hardware start-ups benefit early from a controlled BOM and change history. Lightweight tools like OpenBOM are built with that stage in mind.
Can PLM include quality management?
Some tools combine them. Arena describes itself as cloud PLM and QMS, for example.
How long does PLM take to set up?
Lightweight tools can be running in days, and that's often enough for a start-up. Enterprise PLM can take months, so ask each vendor for a realistic plan based on companies like yours.
