To make a Facebook group private, go to Menu, Groups, Your groups, open the group, tap Manage group, then Group settings, then Privacy under Basic group info, select Private and tap Change privacy. Only admins can do it, and only if the group is less than 30 days old or has fewer than 10,000 members.
Plenty of business groups start public to grow fast, then hit the point where members want a safer place to talk. Switching is straightforward, but Facebook adds a waiting period and a size rule, and both catch admins out.
Here's the process from Facebook's help centre and what changes for your members.
Make your group private, step by step
- Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook, then Groups, then Your groups, and select your group. If you can't see Groups, tap See more.
- Tap Manage group in the top right.
- Scroll down and select Group settings.
- Below Basic group info, tap Privacy and select Private.
- Follow the prompts.
- Tap Change privacy to confirm.
The size and age rule
Facebook only lets public groups switch to private if they're less than 30 days old or have fewer than 10,000 members. A group that's both 30 days or older and 10,000 members or bigger can't switch in the normal way, though Facebook says you can request an exception.
There's one way round the limit built into the rules: if your group was private before and you changed it to public, you can change it back to private at any time, regardless of size or age.
| Your group | Can it go private? |
|---|---|
| Under 30 days old | Yes |
| Fewer than 10,000 members | Yes |
| 30 days or older and 10,000 or more members | Only by requesting an exception |
| Was private before it went public | Yes, at any time |
The three-day window
The switch isn't instant. When an admin schedules the change from public to private, all admins have three days to cancel it. Facebook says:
- Every admin gets a notification when the change is scheduled.
- Everyone in the group gets a notification when the change happens.
- If it's cancelled, the group stays public and admins are told.
That's a useful safety net if you run a group with co-admins. Tell them before you schedule it, so nobody cancels it thinking it's a mistake. If you're still building your admin team, adding an admin to a Facebook group covers that.
What changes when a group goes private
| Public group | Private group | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see posts | Anyone on or off Facebook | Current members |
| Who can see the member list | Anyone on Facebook | Current members |
| Joining | Anyone can join automatically | Requests need approval, unless limited membership is on |
| Sharing content out of the group | Yes | No |
Private groups also get a choice public ones don't: visible or hidden. A visible private group can be found and requested; a hidden one can only be found by people who are invited or already members. Facebook notes that members can approve some of their private group posts to be shown publicly if group highlights are available in the group.
Limited membership: a halfway house
Some private groups can turn on limited membership. Facebook explains that people can then join automatically, without admin approval, as limited members. They can see all group content and react to it, but they can't post, comment or chat until an admin approves them to participate. A request to participate goes to admins either when a limited member joins or when they first try to post or comment.
That's a good fit for a business community that wants low friction at the door but control over who speaks. It keeps the group private without making new members wait days to see anything.
Pages in private groups
One more thing from Facebook's help page that matters for business groups. When a Page joins a group, the Page may have several admins, and all of them can see and interact with posts and members of the group. If your private group discusses anything sensitive, check which Pages are members and who's behind them, and remove any you don't recognise.
Going back to public later
You can change a private group back to public, but there's a catch worth knowing first. Facebook says content from the time the group was private will only be visible to people who were members when the group became public, plus admins and moderators. So newcomers won't see the private archive, which is usually what members would want anyway.

Before you switch
- Check the group's age and member count so you know whether you need an exception.
- Tell your co-admins, because any of them can cancel within three days.
- Post an announcement so members know why it's changing.
- Decide whether the private group should be visible or hidden.
Once it's private, growth comes from invitations and approved requests rather than people stumbling in. My guide to inviting people to a Facebook group covers the options.
My advice
If you're starting a group you think might need privacy later, make it private from day one or switch within the first month. Waiting until you pass 10,000 members turns a two-minute setting into an exception request. And keep it visible unless you have a good reason to hide it, or new members won't be able to find you.
