Free WordPress Themes (2026): Where to Get Safe Ones and What the Directory Checks

The short version: the official WordPress.org theme directory is the safest place to get free WordPress themes in 2026, and popular picks there include Twenty Twenty-Five, Astra, Kadence, GeneratePress and Blocksy. Every theme in the directory has to pass a review, which is the best reason to avoid free downloads from random sites.

Your theme decides how your whole website looks and how easily you can change it. For a small business or creator, a good free theme is enough to launch a professional site, and plenty of big sites still run on one. The risk isn't quality. It's downloading a theme from somewhere that hasn't checked what's inside it.

Where to get free WordPress themes

In no particular order:

  • The WordPress.org theme directory: best for reviewed free themes you install from your dashboard.
  • WordPress.com themes: best if your site is hosted on WordPress.com.
  • Default Twenty themes: best for a clean, fast starting point built by the WordPress team.
  • Theme makers' own sites: best for documentation and demos of themes that are also in the directory.
  • Block themes: best if you want to design every page with the site editor.

The directory also lets you filter by features like accessibility ready, block themes, style variations and translation ready, plus subjects like e-commerce, portfolio and food and drink.

WordPress.org and WordPress.com

The WordPress.org directory is built into every self-hosted WordPress site, so you can search and install themes from Appearance, Themes without downloading anything. It's used by millions of WordPress users, and the popular list includes Twenty Twenty-Five, Hello Elementor, Astra, Twenty Twenty-Four, Kadence, Extendable, OceanWP, Blocksy and GeneratePress.

WordPress.com is the hosted version. Its support pages describe a theme as your site's visual design and overall layout, including colour schemes, typography and page layouts, and give you a starting point rather than building the design from scratch. If you're on WordPress.com, browse its own theme collection from your dashboard.

What the directory review checks

Here's why the directory matters. WordPress itself is released under the GPLv2 or later, and WordPress.org says plugins and themes inherit that licence. The Themes Team's required review rules say everything in a theme's zip file, including code, data and images, must comply with the GPL or a compatible licence, with licence and source details for included fonts and images.

The same rules say any tracking or collection of user data must be off by default and opt-in only. Themes may only recommend plugins hosted on WordPress.org, and plugins can only be installed by user action, never automatically. That's a meaningful safety net. A free theme downloaded from a random site hasn't been held to those rules, and you can't easily tell what it does in the background.

So if you find a theme you love elsewhere, check whether the same theme is listed in the official directory and install it from there.

Updates are the other reason to stick with themes you can trust. Theme authors fix problems and keep up with new WordPress versions over time, and a theme from the directory comes from a listing you can check for its last update. A theme you downloaded from a random site can sit unpatched for years without you noticing, which is exactly how small business sites end up with problems nobody can trace.

How to pick and install a free theme

  1. In your dashboard, go to Appearance, Themes, Add New Theme.
  2. Filter by features you need, such as block themes or accessibility ready.
  3. Preview a few themes with your own content before choosing.
  4. Install and activate the one that suits your site.
  5. Create a child theme if you plan to edit theme files.
  6. Keep the theme updated, and delete themes you aren't using.

What a free theme can and can't do

A free theme gives you the design framework: headers, layouts, typography and colours. It won't add booking, membership or shop features by itself; those come from plugins. That's why a lightweight theme paired with a few well-chosen plugins often beats a heavy theme that tries to do everything. Before you commit, check three things in the directory listing: when the theme was last updated, whether it supports the block editor or site editor, and whether it's marked accessibility ready if that matters to your audience. Then preview it with your own logo and a real page of text, not the demo content. Demo sites are styled to show off the theme, and your site will look different the moment your own words go in. If you change your mind later, switching themes is easy on a new site and much harder on an established one, so take an hour to choose well now.

My verdict: get your free theme from the official directory, start with Twenty Twenty-Five or Astra if you can't decide, and stay away from free downloads on random sites. A reviewed theme is the simplest protection your website will ever get.
