OpenPhone Alternatives (2026): 10 Business Phone Apps

OpenPhone alternatives are other business phone apps that give you a work number for calls and texts on your mobile and computer. Second-line apps suit solo owners, while cloud phone systems and call centre tools suit teams handling lots of calls. Check business texting registration before you pick, because US carriers expect it.

OpenPhone made business phone numbers feel easy for small teams, with shared numbers and texting from an app. If you're comparing options, you'll find plenty of alternatives, from simple second lines to full contact centres.

Here are ten OpenPhone alternatives in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, from second-line apps to cloud phone systems. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, re-checked today. If you're tempted to let AI answer instead, my story of letting an AI answer my business phone for 30 days is worth reading first.

Count who takes calls. A solo owner needs a second number on one phone, while a team needs call routing, shared inboxes and reports.

Then check texting. If customers text you, you'll want a tool that handles business texting registration smoothly.

OpenPhone alternatives at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a free version, free plan or free download, Trial only means a time-limited trial, and No means neither is stated. Free versions nearly always have limits, so check what you'll get before you rely on one.

OpenPhone has a new name, and texting has rules

First, the name. The Quo website's own title reads Quo, formerly OpenPhone, so if you're looking for your old account, that's where it now lives.

Second, the rule that affects every business texting tool in the US. Twilio's support page explains that by registering your messaging campaigns under A2P 10DLC, you get better deliverability and throughput on the same phone numbers. In practice, unregistered business texts are more likely to be filtered, so ask any provider how they handle registration before you move your number.

Features to weigh in a phone app

  • Numbers: local, toll-free and porting your existing number.
  • Texting: business SMS and registration support.
  • Routing: menus, ring groups and opening hours.
  • Team features: shared numbers, notes and reports.
  • Integrations: CRM and help desk connections.

Porting your number without dropped calls

  1. Check that your number can be ported to the new provider.
  2. Set up the new account and routing first.
  3. Start the port and keep the old service active.
  4. Test calls and texts once the port completes.
  5. Cancel the old service only after everything works.

Matching phone tools to team size

If you work alone, a second-line app on your own phone is often all you need, with a separate number for clients.

If a small team shares calls, a virtual phone system with routing, voicemail and shared texting keeps everyone on the same page.

And if calls are the heart of your business, a cloud call centre adds dialers, queues and reports that help you manage volume.

Questions to ask a phone provider

A short list of questions avoids surprises after you've moved your number.

  • Can you port my existing number, and how long does it take?
  • How do you handle business texting registration?
  • What happens to my number if I leave?
  • Do you support the countries my customers call from?
  • Can I try call quality before committing?

Where phone switches go wrong

  • Cancelling too early. Wait until the port completes.
  • Ignoring texting rules. Ask about registration.
  • No call routing plan. Decide who answers when.
  • Forgetting voicemail greetings. Record new ones.

My plain advice on OpenPhone alternatives

Keep your number, whatever you choose. Customers remember it, and porting is usually straightforward if you plan it.

And treat texting as part of the decision, not an afterthought. If your customers text you, registration and deliverability matter as much as call quality.
