Greenhouse Alternatives (2026): 10 Hiring Tools Compared

Greenhouse alternatives are other applicant tracking systems and recruiting tools for posting jobs, managing candidates, scheduling interviews and making offers. Simple tools suit small companies hiring a few roles a year, while recruiting platforms suit growing teams and agencies. Check any automated screening carefully, because some places require bias audits before you use it.

Greenhouse is a respected hiring platform, built for structured interviews and growing teams. For a small business hiring a handful of people a year, it can be more process than you need.

Here are ten Greenhouse alternatives in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, from simple applicant tracking to recruiter CRMs. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, re-checked today. If you're writing your first role description, my guide to a good job description for hiring is a helpful starting point.

Count your hires. A company hiring three people a year needs something very different from one hiring thirty.

Then think about who's involved. Hiring managers need quick ways to give feedback, or candidates sit waiting.

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a free version, free plan or free download, Trial only means a time-limited trial, and No means neither is stated. Free options usually have limits, so check what's included first.

The AI hiring rule many employers miss

Here's a rule that matters if any tool scores or ranks candidates for you. New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection says Local Law 144 prohibits employers and employment agencies from using an automated employment decision tool unless it has had a bias audit within one year of use, the audit information is publicly available, and certain notices have been given to candidates or employees.

The same page notes that the notice must be given 10 business days before using the tool. Not every hiring tool counts, and the law applies to New York City, but it's a good reason to ask any vendor exactly what their automated screening does.

What to compare in an applicant tracking system

  • Job posting: careers page and job board sharing.
  • Pipeline: clear stages for every role.
  • Feedback: scorecards hiring managers will fill in.
  • Scheduling: interview booking without email ping-pong.
  • Compliance: data retention and any automated screening rules.

How to set up a fair hiring process

  1. Write down what the role needs before posting.
  2. Use the same questions for every candidate.
  3. Score answers with a simple scorecard.
  4. Give feedback quickly, ideally within days.
  5. Tell every candidate the outcome.

Hiring software mistakes to avoid

  • Different questions per candidate. Keep it consistent.
  • Slow feedback. Good candidates move on.
  • Unchecked automation. Ask what screening does.
  • No outcome emails. Close the loop for everyone.

If you're hiring for marketing, my guide to hiring a content marketing lead covers that role in depth.

Questions to ask an ATS vendor

Hiring software shapes the candidate experience, so ask about the people side as well as features.

  • How easy is it for candidates to apply on a phone?
  • Can hiring managers give feedback quickly?
  • How does it handle data privacy and deletion?
  • Does any automated screening need an audit where we hire?
  • Can we import past candidates?

Apply to one of your own jobs during the trial. You'll see the process the way candidates do.

Which kind of hiring tool fits your team

A small company hiring a few people a year needs a clear pipeline, a tidy careers page and a way to reply to every candidate.

A fast-growing company needs structured interviews, scheduling and reports, so hiring stays fair as more people get involved.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A recruitment agency needs a CRM for clients as well as candidates, so placements and relationships live in one place.

My plain advice on Greenhouse alternatives

Choose the tool your hiring managers will use. Even a brilliant ATS can't fix feedback that never gets written.

And treat candidates like customers. Quick replies and clear outcomes build your reputation, even with people you don't hire.
