Free n8n Templates (2026): Where to Get Them and the Licence Rule Before You Use Them

The short version: the best place to get free n8n templates in 2026 is n8n's own workflow library, which listed 13,655 community workflows when I checked, sorted into categories such as AI, IT ops, marketing and document ops. You can open a template from inside n8n, and self-hosted n8n runs as the free Community edition, but its licence limits how you use it.

n8n is one of the most flexible automation tools around, and copying a workflow that already works is the quickest way to learn it. Someone has probably built the thing you need, whether that's an AI agent that answers emails, a lead form that lands in a spreadsheet or a social post scheduler. Templates let you see how the pieces connect before you build your own.

Where to find n8n templates

In no particular order:

  • n8n's workflow library: best for the largest set of community templates, searchable by category.
  • The Templates panel inside n8n: best for starting a new workflow from a template without leaving the editor.
  • Your own custom library: best for teams on self-hosted n8n who want to share approved workflows.

How n8n templates work

n8n's docs say that when you create a new workflow, you can start with an empty canvas or use an existing template. Selecting Templates takes you to browse workflows on the n8n website if you're using its template library. You can also submit your own workflows to the library, and n8n says it's working on a creator programme.

The workflow library groups templates into categories including AI, IT ops, marketing and document ops. Examples on the page include a starter workflow for building your first AI agent and one that bulk auto-publishes videos to social networks with AI-written copy and client approval. Each template lists the nodes it uses, so you can see which apps and accounts you'll need before you open it.

If you self-host, n8n's docs say you can point the editor at your own library by setting the N8N_TEMPLATES_HOST environment variable to your own API's base URL. That's useful for agencies and teams who want everyone starting from the same approved workflows.

The licence rule to check first

This is the part that matters if you build automations for other people. n8n's docs say that without a licence key, self-hosted n8n runs as the free Community edition, and you can register your email for a free Registered Community edition with extra features. But n8n is released under its Sustainable Use License, not a standard open source licence.

That licence says you may use or modify the software only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use, and you may share it with others only for free and for non-commercial purposes. Running n8n to automate your own business is fine. Offering n8n itself to clients as your own hosted product is a different matter, so read the licence and n8n's editions page before you set anything like that up.

Checking a template before you trust it

Community templates are written by other n8n users, so treat them like code from a colleague you haven't met. Open each node and check what it does, especially anything that sends emails, posts to social media or writes to a database. Look at where data goes, and remove any steps that send information to services you don't use.

It's also worth reading the template's description and any sticky notes inside the workflow, because creators often explain which accounts you'll need and where to change settings. If a template uses an AI node, check which model it calls and what prompt it sends, so the output sounds like your business rather than someone else's. A short test run with harmless data will show you whether it behaves the way you expect before anything real goes through it.

How to use a free n8n template

  1. Search n8n's workflow library for the task you want to automate.
  2. Open the template and note which apps and nodes it uses.
  3. Create a new workflow in n8n and choose Templates.
  4. Import the template and connect your own accounts to each node.
  5. Run it with test data before switching it on.
  6. Rename it and add notes so you remember what it does in a month.

Going further with automation

Templates are a starting point, not the finish line. Once one works, change it to fit your business and remove any steps you don't need. If you're still choosing a platform, my roundup of n8n alternatives compares the main options, and my guide to AI workflow automation shows where it saves the most time. For ideas you can copy this week, here's how AI automation works for small business.

A tip from building plenty of my own automations: start with the boring job you do every single day. A small workflow you use daily is worth far more than a clever one you run once a month.

My verdict: browse n8n's library, import the closest template from inside the editor, and test it with real but harmless data. Use self-hosted n8n freely for your own business, and read the Sustainable Use License before you build anything to hand over to a client.
