To flip an image in Photoshop, choose Image, then Image Rotation, then Flip Canvas Horizontal or Vertical to flip everything. To flip one layer or selection, choose Edit, then Transform, then Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. Rotating works from the same menus, and the canvas version changes every layer.
Flipping and rotating look like the same job, but Photoshop has two different sets of commands for them, and choosing the wrong set is how people end up flipping their whole design when they only wanted to turn one logo. The deciding question is simple: do you want to change everything or just one piece? Here's how to do both, plus the rotate-without-changing-anything option.
Flip or rotate the whole image
- Open the document.
- Choose Image, then Image Rotation.
- Pick the option you need, such as a canvas flip or a turn through a set angle.
- If you choose Arbitrary, type your angle into the dialog box and choose Clockwise or Counter clockwise, then select OK.
Adobe says these commands reorient every layer in the document at once. They're intended for correcting the overall orientation of a photo captured or scanned the wrong way up. Two of its examples: turning a wide photo into a tall one, and flipping a scanned document that was put in upside down.
Flip or rotate just one layer or selection
- Select the layer in the Layers panel, or make a selection.
- Choose Edit, then Transform.
- Pick a rotate or flip command from the submenu.
This route changes only the part you selected and leaves the rest of the document alone. That's what you want for flipping a logo, mirroring a product shot or turning a single object on a busy canvas. If you need more control, Free Transform in the same menu lets you rotate by dragging.
Image Rotation or Transform: which to use
| You want to... | Use | Affects |
|---|---|---|
| Fix a photo that was scanned sideways | Image, then Image Rotation | Every layer |
| Mirror one logo or object | Edit, then Transform | Only the selected layer or selection |
| Look at the image from another angle | Rotate View tool | Nothing in the file |
| Straighten a crooked horizon | Crop tool, then Straighten | The whole picture, with a crop |
The warning about Image Rotation
Here's the bit worth reading twice. Adobe states that image rotation permanently modifies pixel data across all layers. It isn't a view setting. So before you rotate a document you care about, save a copy. That way, if you realise afterwards that you meant to turn only one layer, you still have the original orientation to go back to.
Rotate your view without changing the file
If you only want to look at the image from another angle, such as when you're drawing or retouching an awkward curve, use the Rotate View tool. Adobe calls it the non-destructive way to rotate for viewing. The file doesn't change, so there's nothing to undo and nothing to save.
Straighten a crooked photo
A tilted horizon isn't a flip or a rotation job. Select the Crop tool, choose Straighten in the Options bar, and drag a line along an edge that should be level. Then confirm the crop. It's quicker and more accurate than guessing an angle with Arbitrary rotation.
Why flip an image at all?
- Fix a mirror image. Selfies and some scans come out the wrong way round.
- Change which way a subject faces. Subjects looking into a page or banner usually feel better than looking out of it.
- Create symmetry. Duplicate a layer, flip it and join the halves for a mirrored effect.
- Match a layout. A flipped photo sometimes fits a template with the text on the other side.
Watch the text
If your image contains writing, flipping it makes the text read backwards, and that's rarely what you want. Flip the picture layer only, not the whole canvas. Keep type on separate layers so it stays readable. The same goes for logos and signs, because flipped brand marks look wrong at a glance and can cause legal headaches.

A worked example: mirroring a product photo
Say you have a photo of a mug with the handle on the right, and your template needs the handle on the left. Select the photo layer, choose Edit, then Transform, then Flip Horizontal. The mug mirrors, the background layers stay put and any text on separate layers isn't affected. If the mug had branding on it, check the logo afterwards, because it will now read backwards. In that case, flip the shot but replace the logo, or choose a different photo. Mirroring is fine for objects without writing.

What to do if you flipped the wrong thing
If you used the canvas command by mistake, undo it straight away before doing anything else. If you've already saved over the file, go back to the copy you made before rotating. This is exactly why Adobe recommends saving a copy first: canvas rotation changes every layer's pixels permanently, so there isn't a gentle way back once the file is saved and closed.
My verdict
Use Image Rotation for the whole picture and Edit, Transform for one layer. Save a copy first because canvas rotation is permanent, and use Rotate View when you just need a different angle to work from.
Frequently asked questions
How do I flip an image in Photoshop?
Choose Image, Image Rotation and a flip option to flip the whole canvas. To flip one layer or selection, choose Edit, Transform and then flip horizontally or vertically.
How do I rotate an image in Photoshop?
Use Image, Image Rotation for the whole document, or Edit, Transform to rotate a layer or selection.
Does Image Rotation change all my layers?
Yes. Adobe says image rotation commands reorient every layer at once and permanently modify pixel data, so save a copy first.
How can I rotate without changing the file?
Use the Rotate View tool. It's a non-destructive way to turn your view.
How do I straighten a tilted photo?
Select the Crop tool, choose Straighten in the Options bar and drag a line along an edge that should be level.
