Free Certificate Templates (2026): 5 Places to Make Awards, Completion and Thank-You Certificates

The short version: Adobe Express, Canva, Microsoft Create, the Google Slides template gallery and Word's built-in templates are where to get free certificate templates in 2026. Adobe Express and Canva have the widest range, and both let you edit a design in the browser and download it ready to print or email.

Certificates do a lot of quiet work. They thank volunteers, mark the end of a course, recognise a team member or make a child's swimming badge feel official. You don't need design software to make a good one. You need a clean template, the right wording and a few minutes, plus a quick check that the logo and images you add are yours to use.

Five places to make a certificate

In no particular order:

  • Adobe Express: best for a large range of editable certificate designs made in the browser.
  • Canva: best for designing a certificate with your own logo, photos and brand colours.
  • Microsoft Create: best for certificates you'll finish and print from Word or PowerPoint.
  • Google Slides template gallery: best if your team already works in Google Workspace.
  • Word's built-in templates: best for a plain, formal certificate without going online.

Adobe Express, Canva and Google in more detail

Adobe Express has a dedicated free certificate templates page with editable designs you can make your own online in minutes. Its range covers certificates of appreciation, participation and recognition, and it listed 2,757 certificate templates when I checked, so you won't run out of styles for a school, club or workplace.

Canva is the one I'd use when the certificate needs to look like your brand. Its content licence sorts everything in its library into four categories, from most to least restrictive: Education, Branded, Pro and Free content. Free content is covered by Canva's free content licence for permitted uses, and if you mix branded content into a design, the stricter branded rules apply. That's easy to live with for a certificate, as long as you know which elements you've used.

If you work in Google Workspace, Google's help explains that you open Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms or Sites, click Template Gallery at the top right and pick a template, and a copy opens for you to edit. It also notes that a template marked Add-on may need an add-on installed before you can use it.

Microsoft Create and Word's own templates are the simplest route if you're making a batch. Open a certificate design, type the first name, and save it. Then you can duplicate it for each person, or use a mail merge from a list of names if you're comfortable with Word. It isn't glamorous, but for a whole class or a volunteer evening it's far quicker than designing each one by hand. Whichever tool you use, keep one master file you don't edit, so next year's awards start from a clean copy.

Logos and template packs: the licence detail

Two lines in Canva's licence are worth knowing. First, Canva says it doesn't grant any right for the use of names, people, trademarks, logos or works of art depicted in free content. So if a template includes an image with a recognisable brand or person, that part isn't cleared just because the template is free. Use your own logo, or one you have permission to use.

Second, Canva's licence says you can't use free content in design templates meant to be passed on to others, such as business card or greeting card templates handed on as a product. Making a certificate for your own course or event is fine. Building a pack of certificate templates from Canva elements to hand on to other businesses isn't.

Making a certificate that looks official

  1. Pick the type first: completion, achievement, appreciation or participation.
  2. Choose a template with plenty of white space for the name.
  3. Add your own logo and a signature line, never a logo you don't own.
  4. Write the reason clearly, with the date and the course or event name.
  5. Download a PDF for printing, or a PNG for sharing on social media.
  6. Print one copy on good card first to check the colours and margins.

Courses, volunteers and team awards

Certificates work well for course completions, volunteer thank-yous, staff awards and school events. If you're designing in Canva, my guide on adding a border in Canva gives your certificate a classic frame, and my Canva review covers the app in more depth. If you've built yours in Word, here's how to convert Word to PDF so it looks the same on every screen.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A word on wording, because it matters more than the design. Say what the person did, not just that they took part: completed the course, led the project, gave twenty hours to the food bank. A specific line is what makes someone keep a certificate rather than recycle it.

My advice: Adobe Express for quick variety, Canva when it needs your branding. Keep the wording short, the name big, and only use logos you own.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get free certificate templates?

Adobe Express, Canva, Microsoft Create, the Google Slides template gallery and Word's built-in templates all offer free certificate templates you can edit.

Can I add my own logo to a free certificate template?

Yes. Use your own logo or one you have permission to use. Canva's licence says it doesn't grant rights to trademarks or logos depicted in its free content.

How many certificate templates does Adobe Express have?

Adobe Express listed 2,757 certificate templates when I checked, including appreciation, participation and recognition designs.

Can I make certificate templates to give to other businesses?

Not from Canva's free content. Its licence says free content can't be used in design templates meant to be passed on to others.

Save a PDF for printing so the layout stays fixed, and a PNG if you're sharing the certificate on social media or by message.
